Leaving the cycle of addiction is very difficult. But it is not impossible. For some that choose to stop the cycle, they have some options available. There are treatment centers available that treat victims of substance abuse by detoxing them, giving them medication to deal with the physical symptoms of withdrawal, and to provide them the mental, physical, and spiritual support that they need to survive a post addiction lifestyle. Once a program has been completed, there are options such as half way houses that people can find, which give them a safe home to go to, and the ability to find a job, but without the threat of drugs being a factor in the home. Addiction is a long term disease, but it is very curable. People can find support systems in lots of places to continue being substance free, such as Alcohol and Narcotics anonymous, finding a sponsor, and religion.
I hope that you are able to come away from this series on addiction with an understanding of the stories, and the struggles of addicts, in their own words, and the empathy to motivate you to do what you can. We need to cancel the stigma surrounding substance abuse, and treat it the same as any other mental illness. Together, we can chance society’s view on substance abuse, and help bring more people into a substance free lifestyle.
