Joel Robison’s Bio:

Joel Robison is a conceptual photographer originally from British Columbia, Canada and currently living in southern England in the UK.

In his photography he blends our real world with one filled with fantasy and whimsy resulting in photographs that play with our ideas of size, scale, function and realism. Over the past six years Joel Robison has built a portfolio of work that has reached millions of viewers around the world and has grown a client base that includes Coca-Cola, Yahoo, Adobe, FIFA and other international clients.

Recently Joel has begun his own workshop program, teaching classes to hundreds of students around the world, helping them to create their own images and to tell their stories through their art.

Portrait and documentary photographer Anne Helene Gjelstad on the Be Inspired Photography Podcast.

In this week’s show, we chat to portrait and documentary photographer Anne Helene Gjelstad about her background in fashion, what you can do to find your own photographic voice and telling the full story.

Anne Helene Gjelstad’s Bio:

Anne Helene Gjelstad is an award-winning photographer and her work has been published in books, magazines and newspapers. She has held solo exhibitions and participated in collective exhibitions locally and internationally.  Anne Helene had a long career as a fashion designer before she followed her childhood dream and became a photographer. She is educated at the Norwegian National Academy of Craft and Art Industry and at Bilder Nordic School of Photography. Anne Helene is also a licensed teacher and hosts her own workshops in portrait photography and postproduction.

Anne Helene Gjelstad loves photographing people the most – honest pictures of unique individuals. She especially love photographing the young because they are being who they are in front of the camera: No fences, no pretensions and teaching us that it is enough to simply be who we are. She aims to capture our inner landscapes and to take portraits that mean something to the person themselves as well as the viewer. Everybody deserves a really good portrait and this is her goal. To Anne Helene the eyes are the most important in a portrait: ‘The eyes reflect our truth, gains and losses; they mirror our inner being, our souls’.

Since 2008 Anne Helene Gjelstad has been documenting the lives and heritage of the remarkable elderly women on the small Estonian islands of Kihnu and Manija in the Baltic Sea. True to tradition, they still live the old-fashioned way by wearing traditional costumes and by passing handicraft skills down through generations. Her solo exhibition ‘Big heart, strong hands’ is still on tour in Estonia after four years. It was even been exhibited in the National Museum in Tartu and the lobby of Parliament in Tallinn. Two of her images were also part of the exhibition Intangible Cultural Heritage in National Art Museum of China in May 2014 and Anne Helene was invited to the grand opening, which she describes as ‘huge’.

He has been profiled in such publications as STM Magazine, The West Australian and Scoop Magazine. Jarrad’s award-winning images have been showcased in exhibitions at home and abroad.

In recent year’s he’s hung out of open plane windows to shoot the aerial landscapes of Iceland, captured portraits of Maasai children in remote Tanzania, road-tripped around Europe with international bearded folk musicians and spent 24 hours straight pulling stunts to raise money for charity.

Lifestyle and commercial photographer John Schell on the Be Inspired Photography Podcast.

In this week’s show, we chat to lifestyle and commercial photographer John Schell about how photography changed his life, capturing emotion and his love of Southern California.

John Schell’s Bio:

Born and raised in New York, John Schell spent what seems like a lifetime in and around the Atlantic Ocean; surfing, swimming, fishing, and boating, really just generally enjoying life outdoors.

It was his love of year-long warm weather, in fact, which brought him to Southern California – the golden-lit place that he’d dreamed of living since he was a grom chasing waves and skating backyard halfpipes on Long Island. Putting photography aside for a while to get a degree in teaching, John Schell spent the better part of his days attending classes while soaking in everything that was California.

From about 2005 until 2014, John was a high school special education teacher in the San Diego City School district, a job he loved for both it’s challenges and it’s rewards. It was during that time that his love of photography was rekindled via the students he’d teach, often bringing in disposable film cameras for them to keep and document their lives. It was through this mentoring and love of raw storytelling that his photography career began. And now, although he misses the formal classroom terribly, John is happy to have a successful, fledgeling photography career on his hands.

John Schell often refers to his work as a “tribute to Southern California” and has recently shot several campaigns for Skechers USA as well as a bevy of smaller, Southern California-based companies all of whom sought John out for the fun, playful, sun-drenched aesthetic and vibe of his work.

John Schell currently lives and work in Los Angeles, California with his dog, Olive.

In this week’s show, we chat to art photographer Aneta Ivanova about her creative process, making a living from art photography and her best advice for staying inspired.

Aneta Ivanova’s Bio:

My name is Aneta Ivanova and I am 23 years old photographer born and currently working in Varna, Bulgaria. I’ve been fascinated by art since a little child, starting with drawing and painting at first, then switching to photography. After doing a lot of conceptional work and portraits I started experimenting with different techniques to give a new meaning to my photographs – at first long exposures, then double and multiple exposures combining a number of portraits and then portraits with landscape and nature elements.

I find inspiration everywhere around me. I read, listen to music, look at art, go for long walks and dream a lot. The sea has always been my ultimate source of inspiration which can be seen in some of my works. What fascinates me is the fact that it is so unpredictable and powerful, always changing, it can heal us at some moments but also has the ability to destroy us in others.

I always try to keep my work as personal as possible, shooting self-portraits or portraits of my sisters mostly, as I feel that nobody else could actually recreate what’s in my mind better. I believe that an artwork should not be explained, that it should be asking questions rather than giving answers. For me art is something that’s happening inside the person who’s creating or viewing, it’s not a product or an object, it’s an experience.  And by this means, by viewing or enjoying art, one is creating it again and again, giving it new life each time.

Her first paid assignments came only 4 months after she took a camera into her hands – 2 years later she had her first exhibition and started working with celebrities.

Roza Sampolinska creates photographs that are filled with magic and dramatic light. She captures images with a style that is artistic and unique in every aspect. Her style is unique and easily recognisable. A master in playing with shadows and light, she creates mesmerising photographs that remind of an old Hollywood film-noir.

Roza’s portraits have been published in magazines worldwide, such as German STERN, Digital Photo Video, EKS MAGAZYN, PANGEA Magazine, Miasto Kobiet, SNAP Magazine, Pokochaj Fotografie, Digital Photo Video, Fotografia i Aparaty Cyfrowe, Vogue Italia, etc. Her works have been exhibited in galleries in Poland and Germany. She is now preparing for her first exhibition in the U.S. Roza is a successful photography instructor, conducting portrait photography workshops in Asia, USA and Europe.
