“Our intent is to fuse our love of vintage and androgyny with wearability and innovation to
deliver you a closet staple on which you can build your wardrobe.”- Alana Hadid & Emily Perlstein
Born and raised in New York, Emily Perlstein was always certain of three things- she loved fashion, wanted to
work for herself and hated winter. Avoiding winter was an easy solution, she moved to Los
Angeles, attended USC and has taken LA as her adopted home ever since. Emily’s career
trajectory was more of a labyrinth-after studying Public Relations and interning with Teen Vogue,
Prada/Miu Miu and Who What Wear, she assumed she would go on to work for a publication or
design house. It was not until a chance part-time retail job during her senior year that she
realized personal shopping and styling held much more appeal than a desk job.
After spending her early twenties as a personal shopper and stylist, Emily was struggling on
how to fulfill her entrepreneurial aspirations. At 25, Emily met Alana and the two became
friends. On a sunny day in May, Alana was discussing an idea she had for a company- Emily
thought it was genius and (unsolicitedly) volunteered to be her business partner. 18 months later
La Detresse was born, and the rest is history.
