Welcome back to Some (More) Good News with Kate Cherichello, episode 19!
Elizabeth Kurpat (formerly known as Porcelli) is the school psychologist for Belvidere School District in New Jersey, wife, mother, friend, and if all that weren’t enough, is also the BES play director, Improv and Drama Advisor, and BHS Technical Crew adviser. Wait, another-- She is also the managing director of the Phillipsburg Area Summer Youth Theatre. Actually, the list goes on.
Ever since I’ve known Elizabeth, she has had her hand in many pots, and somehow appears to give 100% to all of it.
Despite being in so many directions, she is grounded, calm, and gives such thoughtful insights into the students with whom she works.
I have been spoiled to know Elizabeth since freshman year of high school in New Jersey, and it has been such a blessing to get to spend outdoor time with her quite a bit throughout the pandemic. Her little Walter is adorable, and if you see him this month, wish him a happy first birthday 😉
Regarding the arts and children, a theme that has come up continually throughout my life is how much benefit there is to a child’s growth from being a part of the arts. Elizabeth and I talk of theater specifically here, and we both have seen first-hand the positive effects of students jumping into a theater production. I know I have experienced it myself. Once shy and afraid to get on to the stage, well, you know what has happened since then! Elizabeth gives many stories of students she has seen blossom and find a place where they feel accepted and loved. She tells of her own venture out of her comfort zone to take an adult tap class, too, explaining that she didn’t want to be a hypocrite and make the students stretch themselves without doing it herself, too.
And a conversation with Elizabeth would not be complete if we did not bring up Disney, and mentioning “silencio Bruno” was just too perfect. So after listening to this episode of Some (More) Good News, watch Luca, silence that inner critic/fearmonger, and go look beyond your comfort zone.
