Simon: The one Drew doesn't like (hold on to that)
- The dedication to his sister, and his willingness to throw everything away for her
- Dedication for his family that mirrors Mal's
Book: Experienced in the world, The Spiritual guide
- About the journey, not the destination
- Who is Book? there is something more there
Inara: Fiery, The Mother and Soul of the ship
- An equal to Mal
- Clearly respected, and acts as a conscience
River: The broken bird
- Acting felt forced, and Can tell Summer may not be comfortable with the role
- Simon's description of River, juxtaposed with her acting shows how out of place River is mentally
The misdirection with Simon being the mole
Devon can't pronounce names again
Writing real complex characters
Obligatory reference to Buffy and Angel
Simon and Book, the Anime transfer students
Setting up multiple factions (Alliance, Reavers, other criminal gangs) with out needing to show much of them
- The Alliance and how they are not looking out for the little guy
Protagonist doesn't mean the good guys
A palate of greys with the character moralities
The pragmatism of the crew, and making sure they cover their backs
Western Genre undertones in the music and design choices in the ship and themes
SciFi, Western and Horror genres blending
The threat of the Reavers shown very well in how the crew reacts to the threat
- Clearly a very multicultural 'verse and how each faction has clear differences in their spheres of influence
Hot Take: Drew doesn't think this is that great, but 10/10 for potential
Laying out the ground work for future seasons
- Planned or natural result of character progression, Either way, good writing
Drew worries about how the characters will be as individuals, or are they only going to be defined by their relationship to Mal
The Crew/Serenity can almost be seen as a separate character
