On episode 13 of Beating The Odds we have Chef Robert Irvine and UFC BantamWeight Champion, Dominick Cruz. Chef Irvine is an English world class chef, entrepreneur, and host. His style of cooking along with his personality and creativity has revolutionized the food channel starting with his show, Dinner: Impossible, airing over 100 episodes to date. Over a million viewers tune in weekly to watch Robert chef it up’!
Dominick Cruz is a two-time UFC bantamweight champion. His fighting style is characterized by unorthodox movements with a powerful wrestling base and he originally won his first UFC title in 2010. After a string of injuries forced him to lose the title, he came back in 2016 to regain it. Since then, Cruz has been training post-3 year layoff and after his recent loss to Henry Cejudo, he hopes to come back stronger for his next fight.
In this episode, Irvine, Cruz and Jim spoke about their experience on a USO tour together. Collectively they’ve served on 100’s of tours and each of them are adamant about supporting our US service members. Dominick spoke about the future of sports during COVID but more importantly, how the UFC has taken the lead on safe sporting events with their newly debuted, “Fighter Island.”

On Episode 12 of Beating The Odds we have ex-NFL player, artist, actor, philanthropist and business owner, Vernon Davis! Vernon had an extensive career in the NFL with 2 pro-bowl selections, leading the league in receiving touchdowns in 2009, and a Super Bowl Championship at Super Bowl 50 in 2016. Since his NFL career, Vernon has co-created a design agency, launched the Vernon Davis Visual Arts Scholarship as well as the Vernon Davis Foundation for the Arts. As an actor Vernon has starred on BayWatch, The League, and Red Winter amongst others.
Vernon and Jim spoke about the transition out of the NFL. What does it really take to excel in a career after the NFL and what is it like being an actor? Davis also noted that his mission is to help others: “for me it’s just encouraging people to be benevolent and to help each other - it’s all about helping each other.”

Many may recognize him from his role in Lethal Weapon and others like Predator 2, Point Break, Under Siege, and Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. He’s also appeared as himself on the iconic Fox animation, Family Gay as well as multiple episodes of Entourage.
Gary and Jim spoke about his portrayal in the Buddy Holly Story and even got to hear some of his new ‘Buseyisms’ straight out of his new book titled, “Buseyisms: Basic Instructions Before Leaving Earth.” The book is co-authored by his long-time partner Steffanie Sampson and includes incredible acronyms Busey has come up with over the years.

On Episode 9 of Beating The Odds we have Dr. James V. Hardt. Dr. Hardt is the founder and president of the Biocybernaut Institute. A Biocybernaut is for the mind and body what an astronaut is for outer space, to paraphrase Hardt’s own words to Jim. For the last 30 years Dr. Hardt has been studying the relationship between brain waves and human functioning. He’s studied monks, yogis, and zen meditators to eventually develop his technology based on electroencephalographic (EEG) measurement and feedback. The Biocybernaut technology can cure key aspects of personality and has been endorsed by Tony Robbins and many others.

Today on Beating The Odds, Jim and Dr. Hardt spoke about the differences in brainwave states and what that means for your mood, effectiveness, and creativity. Chad is currently the flight surgeon to the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and a Senior Clinical Consultant to the Office of the Secretary of Defense in Washington DC. Dr. Kahl is also an Assistant Professor at the Walter Reed Medical Center and the Uniformed Services University College of Medicine; teaching the next generation of medical students in integrative medical techniques for treating chronic pain, PTSD and aerospace medicine.
Chad's main focus in the last decade has been on alternate modalities, like prolotherapy, meditation, nutrition, and acupuncture, in treating chronic debilitating physical and mental conditions servicemembers face.

The first, developing a “sports neuroscience” - connecting kinesiology and neuroscience together to identify and understand common heuristics. The second, to train a brain-machine or brain-body to perform actions just like a human would. This work has been the basis for his fascination with Jim and in this conversation, they dive into some of the reasoning behind Jim’s incredible mental abilities.
