Hello friends and welcome back to BORP. For EP 53 Mickey and Tristan collectively accepted the demoralizing transition from summer to fall is in full swing. Mickey is handling this metamorphosis with the grace and dignity he is known for and Tristan is... coping. So really everyone is maturing. Moving onto the show, for our album pick (11:50) we listened to the 1996 snarling and pugilistic hip hop opus Wrath of the Math by Jeru The Damaja. For movie time with Tristan and Mick (1:18:20) we watched the psychedelic sci fi fantasy erotica of a trip, Heavy Metal. For New and Noteworthy (2:00:00) we check out some cool stuff from Cannons, Sassy 009, Stereolab, and Circuit des Yeux. For Three Questions for Tristan (2:22:03), Mickey makes Tristan channel his inner hair metal fan and really just a bunch of other weird stuff. Find the episode on Apple Podcasts and Spotify. You can also find our EP 53 playlist on Apple Music and Spotify. Thanks for listening, don't forget to rate & subscribe and follow our IG page @beatsonrepeatpod for more from the show.
Hello friends and welcome back to BORP. Between adjusting to semi post pandemic summer activities, Mickey's continued furtherance of scholastic studies, and Tristan essentially moving to the beach to teach surfing to unsuspecting passers by despite barely being able to swim himself, it's been a while since we were able to get an episode finished. Luckily, what an episode it is for you all. Tristan is still at it nagging everyone with Covid regulation PSAs and Mickey busted out some truly stellar Chinese greet tea for this one. Our album pick this episode (15:36) is Metric's 2003 debut LP, Old World Underground Where Are You Now? Mickey and Tristan discuss the post 9/11 surveillance state and ever expanding millennial income gap that contributes to the anxiety and cynicism that permeates the album. For our film pick (1:11:15) we watched the 2018 Lars Von Trier film The House That Jack Built. Is it a bitting satire that critiques our normalization of violence, or is it self important pretension that delusionaly conflates fetishized abuse with high art? For New and Noteworthy (1:56:30) we check out music from Koreless, Rhye, Sleater Kinney, and Sau Poler. For Three Questions (2:22:48) Mickey tries to go easy on Tristan but Tristan bombs anyways. Find the show on Apple Podcasts, Spotify and our website Midrange. Follow us at Beats On Repeat Pod for more content from the show. You can also find our episode playlist featuring all of the songs we discussed on Spotify and Apple Music. Thanks for listening!
Hello friends, welcome to BORP EP 51 and get ready for some fun- sorry about the lame rhyme there. It's great to be back in the studio and sharing our hot, occasionally silly takes on music and film. Mickey is fully immersed in that micro dosing life but if you thought that would calm him down a little think again. Tristan had just returned from the mountains before recording so he's still shaking that Shining-esque cabin fever (note- we recorded this episode before the current pandemic travel restrictions). For our album pick (12:30) we listened to the masterful and ambitious Dots & Loops by Stereolab. Tristan and Mick get into some heated discussions about what actually constitutes pop music in doing so- it's spicy! For our film pick (1:28:14) we watched the 2015 art house (maybe) horror (definitely) film Green Room, and dive into the ideological implications of the characters in it. For New & Noteworthy (2:00:28) we checked out music from Nick Hakim & Roy Nathanson, Tkay Maidza, Sun June, and Spirit Of The Beehive. For Three Questions (2:20:38) Mickey takes Tristan on a trip down memory lane, but also makes him talk about hockey. Rude! Listen to the episode on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or our website Midrange. Do your thing with the likes, subscribes, and comments as the algorithm demands it. You can also find all of the tracks we discuss on our EP 51 playlist on Apple Music and Spotify. Thanks so much for listening!
Hello friends and at last welcome back to BORP! after a long pandemic safety related hiatus we are finally back with the big EP 50! We're super excited to be back and have missed you all very much. After so long of not being able to record together Mick and Tristan spend time catching up on their newly hermetic life styles. Mick is drinking a lot more tea and Tristan mostly just wants to play with Pete The Cat. Because we've hit one of those fun mile stone episodes (where's our congratulatory letter from the queen?) we went with some extra special topics for this round. For our album pick (18:05) we listen to the colossal break up record, and Tristan's favourite album of the 2010s, Take Me Apart by Kelela. For our film pick (1:14:50) we watched the seminal, monumental, and towering anime epic Akira. We're equal parts mollified by the technical wizardry and the convoluted thematics but what a ride. For New and Noteworthy (1:57:20) we checked out tracks my Rósín Murphy, Jerry Paper, Playboi Carti, and Jeff Bryant. Moving on to Three Questions (2:25:02) Tristan reveals himself as the uncultured swine that he is but at least he likes trees. We had tons of fun recording in Mick's newly flexed out studio space and are pumped to be making new episodes again. Find the episode on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or our site Midrange. Also find our episode playlist featuring every track we cover in detail on Apple Music and Spotify. Thanks friends!
Hello friends, welcome to EP 49 of BORP- we are very excited to have you joining us today! As we transition firmly into Autumn, Tristan fills more and more with existential dread as the onset of winter approaches. However he does get to show off more of his sweaters. Mickey has elected to take a brief sabbatical from drinking in hopes of living his best life and having a shinier beard. You can't see because it's a podcast but it is absolutely working, oh wow. As such, it was just Tristan that brought a beer this time (9:20) which was an Xtra Pale Ale from one of the newer Vancouver spots, Academy Brewing. For our album pick (21:05) Mickey selected perhaps the most atypical and out there album we've ever had on the show. We listen to the minimalist piano ballad, spoken word collaboration by Chilly Gonzales and Jarvis Cocker titled Room 29. We debate if the album, focusing on the excesses of Hollywood, is deeply funny or morbidly sad. We landed on it being a lot of both. For movie time (1:20:35) Tristan selected one of the very best and progressive comedies of 2019, Booksmart. Our New and Noteworthy (1:48:25) selections cover tracks from Max D, No Joy, Molly Birch, and Nubya Garcia. For Three Questions (2:19:27) Mickey attempts to commune with Winter Tristan and it goes about as well as expected. Find the show on Apple podcasts and Spotify. You can also find our EP49 playlist on Apple Music and Spotify. Don't forget to check out our website Midrange, where we host all of our podcasts, and sign up for the newsletter. Hello friends and welcome to EP 48 of BORP! What a time to be alive, yes? Maybe don't think too hard about that. In this episode Tristan and Mick ponder yet again the coming Nickleback reckoning that all Canadians must one day endure. Mickey reminisces on the good old days of the east coast house scene in the 80s while Tristan tries to preemptively prevent Drake from suing us. Not today Drake! Mickey makes the mistake of bringing up Star Trek which segues, obviously, into Tristan discussing an essay he read about how earl grey tea is trash. Our beer picks this episode (7:10) had us checking out the Slow Hand Galaxy Pilsner and an exotic raspberry sour from Brewhall and we had a heck of a time with both of them. For album time with Tristan and Mick (22:54) we listened to -err- It's Album Time With Todd Terje, the nerdy as heck space disco fantasy from the Scandinavian DJ. Things took a turn for surreal and ridiculous paranoia for movie time (1:29:50), as we watched the 1988 John Carpenter cult classic They Live. We're here to to watch that never-ending fight scene and chew bubblegum; and we're all out of bubblegum. For new and noteworthy (2:12:48) we checked out stuff from Washed Out, Seu Jorge, Bully, and Khruangbin. For Three Questions (2:44:18) Micky busts out his hardest rapid fire yet and Tristan is still shaken. Find the episode on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and Midrange. Don't forget to rate and subscribe in exchange for good karma. You can also find our episode playlists on Apple Music and Spotify. Follow us on IG to stay up to date on all our episodes and the occasional pic of Pete The Cat. Hang in there kitties!
Hello fellow residents of our dystopian- and hopefully alternate- reality that is 2020. Welcome to episode 47 of BORP. In this round Mick discusses his time spent at the recent indigenous rights demonstration from oration to musical output. Meanwhile Tristan has recently discovered vitamins and supplements so it's a bit of a sliding scale for self betterment. Also, Mick added sound effects to this episode so it's kinda like 90s talk radio and it's awesome. We think. Moving on to beers (5:45) we try some lovely offerings from Electric Bicycle and Ile Sauvage. For our album pick (21:10) we listened to the subversive but no less seminal debut LP from 90s slack hip hop pioneers The Pharcyde, Bizarre Ride II The Pharcyde. For movie time (1:25:36) we watched the Tarantino, grindhouse, *literal* thrill ride, Death Proof. In his enthusiasm for the subject matter Tristan mixed up the names of the actors and cars in it several times; he begs forgiveness. New and Noteworthy (2:16:20) from A Tribe Called Red, Special Interest, Caleb Heppner, and Phoebe Bridgers. For three questions (2:46:00) Mickey grossly over estimates how much Tristan eats; Tristan also pretty much forgets how to count to 10. You don't have to forgive him for that one. Find the episode on Spotify or iTunes. We also have our EP47 playlist that features every track we discuss at length on Spotify and Apple Music. Thanks for listening!
Hello friends and welcome to EP 46 of BORP. As this episode airs protests across America and across the world are still being organized in response to police brutality and systemic racism against the black and BIPOC communities. Even as media attention moves on to other topics as it invetibley always does, its important to acknowledge that these protests and the advocates helping organize them are absolutely not going away until some real changes happen. With that in mind this episode will focus on highlighting music and film made by black American artists and their contributions to our culture. But first, some beers (6:20). We checked out a hazy lager from Old Abbey Ales and black raspberry sour from House of Funk. Our album pick (18:25) was the 2006 debut from Lupe Fiasco, Food & Liquor. For movie time (1:15:25) we watched the 1992 deep cut featuring a very young Tupac, Juice. For New and Noteworthy (1:54:04) we checkout new music by Terrace Martin/ Denzel Curry/ Kamasi Washington/ Daylyt, Robert Glasper, Run The Jewels, and Elah Hale. For Three Questions (2:19:45) Mick got extra Inception-y with his queries and broke Tristan's already fragile brain. Find the episode Spotify or iTunes. Find our EP47 playlist on Spotify and Apple Music. Thanks for listening and arrest the cops that murdered Breonna Taylor.
Hello friends and welcome to EP 45 of BORP! A quick note before getting into the preview. The turnaround time between recording, editing, and posting our episodes is not super fast, which is kind of the way we like it. As such, this episode was recorded before the racist murder of George Floyd sparked protests confronting police brutality and systemic racism around the globe, which is why there is no discussion of it. We look forward to sharing our thoughts on the issue in our next episode that we will be recording soon, however one of the many lessons to draw from what has happened in recent weeks is you shouldn't need a catalyst to confront racism, you should just do it all the time. For EP 45 we checked out some beers (6:06) from Wildeye Brewing and Off The Rail. Our album pick (27:20) was the synth noir blues experiment from Timber Timbre, Scincerly, Future Polution. We looked to modern westerns for our film pick (1:28:16) with Hell or High Water. For New and Noteworthy (2:10:02) we checked out some great tracks by Squirrel Flower, Park Hye Jin, Mint Julep, and Agar Agar. For Three Questions (2:36:32) Mick went with one theme for all of the questions and it's a miracle Tristan made it through the last one. Find the episode on Spotify or iTunes, search Beats On Repeat. Or find the show on our website Midrange along with our other podcasts like Track and Food. You can also find our EP45 playlist on Spotify and Apple Music. Thanks for listening everyone!
Ok team welcome to EP 44 of BORP! We are very excited to bring you all sorts of neat content about music, film, and beer. Mickey is speaking more and more in French lately so there is also that. Tristan discusses his various Star Wars themed socks while Mickey has some slightly more intimate swag that none of us saw coming. We try to figure out the difference between internet rap and Soundcloud rap but don't make much progress. As the pandemic wears on and the liquor stores shelves are getting a little slim Tristan and Mick went in different directions for the beer picks (6:22). Mickey went super new and indie with a black pilsner from Taylight Brewing, where as Tristan returned to his dark master Brassneck with the Employee of the Month American Pale Ale. For our album pick (26:40) we went with the harrowing Let England Shake by PJ Harvey, and examine her exquisite writing documenting England's role in the horrors of modern warfare. Things don't get any more rosy for our film pick (1:25:13) as Mickey selected the 90s sci fi horror black sheep Event Horizon- dust off those latin textbooks! For New and Noteworthy (2:10:44) we check out music by Ela Minus, Breakbot, Kari Faux, and Many Voices Speak. As we wind down with Three Questions (2:32:42) Mickey asks Tristan to predict when he thinks the next world war might start. Maybe not today, definitely not tomorrow, but maybe at some point? Find the episode on Spotify or iTunes, and find our episode playlist on Spotify or Apple Music, just search 'Beats on Repeat' on your platform of choice. You can also find the episode and playlist on our website Midrange as well as lots of other cool stuff from the whole team. Thanks for listening friends!
