Beauty in the Brokenness – Christian Women (Bible Study, Faith, Healing, Trauma, Hope)

The story of "Rahab the Prostitute" provides hope and freedom for those struggling under the heavy weight of shame. Where does shame originate? Why is it so pervasive? And how do we break free from it?

Something must have gone tragically wrong in Rahab’s life. Who told her she wasn’t worthy of love and respect? Was she abused to the point that she couldn’t see the value of her body? Had Rahab resigned herself to this sin-cursed profession, or was she hoping to someday free herself?  And could she ever have imagined the Hero who would come to her rescue?

If you've ever struggled to understand the story of Judah and Tamar from Genesis 38, I've got you!! In this episode, Carolyn Custis James shares a framework for understanding the stories of scripture, the role of women,  and why Tamar, who posed as a prostitute to seduce her father-in-law, is considered a hero...Wait, WHAT???

3 We are not reading an American book.
4 The Bible is literature and must be studied as such.

Sometimes we look around, and it seems like evil is winning. We wonder why God allows the wicked to prosper while the righteous suffer. But when we follow the story to the end, we are assured that God has the final say. Psalm 57 reminds us of the sovereignty of God and helps us trust His good and gracious plans during our darkest days.

In Genesis 38, we read the story of Tamar, a woman who was sexually used, abused, and tossed aside. At first glance, her story seems like a modern-day mini-series with a questionable rating. Yet it is woven with threads of grace, redemption, and hope. There is so much more to her than we might understand with a cursory reading of her story. Tamar shows us what it means for a woman to be a warrior, fighting for the kingdom of God. Her story reminds us that God’s ways are higher than our ways. And He is bigger than the sins, mistakes, and violations committed against us. Anyone who thinks the Bible is a boring book full of outdated stories has not read the tale of Judah and Tamar.
