For much of our lives, success is something handed to us. It’s shaped by culture, family expectations, professional achievement and the approval we receive from others. However, there often comes a moment in a woman’s life when those definitions stop fitting — not because she has failed, but because she has evolved.
In this episode of Becoming: Conversations in Elegance& Empowerment, we explore what it means to become a woman who defines success for herself.
You’ll hear about:
- Why many women experience a quiet shift in their definition of success as they grow.
- The psychological research behind autonomy, purpose and meaningful work.
- How remarkable women such as Louise Hay, Vera Wang, Arianna Huffington and Coco Chanel created success on their own timelines and
- How you can begin redefining success in your own life with clarity and confidence.
Psychological research supports this evolution. In a 2000 article in Psychological Inquiry, psychologists Edward Deci and Richard Ryan found that people thrive when their goals align with three fundamental psychological needs: autonomy, competence and connection.
Similarly, research by psychologist Carol Ryff, published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, shows that long-term well-being is strongly connected to autonomy, personal growth, purpose in life and meaningful relationships — not simply external achievement. In other words, sustainable success is rarely imposed from the outside — It grows from internal alignment.
You may find yourself asking a powerful question while listening to this episode: Is the life I’m building still aligned with the woman I’m becoming? Sometimes, the most meaningful shifts in our lives begin with a single honest question.
Many of the ideas we’re exploring this season are expanded in my newest book, Becoming Lavishly Loving, which explores intuition, emotional boundaries and protecting your inner world with elegance.
