  • Why Behavior Coaching Needs to Be a Stand Alone Service | Behavior Change Fitness Podcast 2022 | BUC #20

What separates a personal/fitness trainer from becoming the ultimate coach?

Too narrow of a focus. In order to make a difference in facets of health and fitness like stress management, nutrition, and others, you need a time when your client isn't straining from your workout on the floor.

Weight Loss Behavior Coaching sessions allow trainers to:
    1. Break up their day/get off the gym floor
    2. Dig deeper into their clients' unhealthy behaviors to recommend healthier strategies
    3. Make more money & get clients better results.

  • Raising Client Compliance | Behavior Change Fitness Podcast 2022 | BUC #19

Is "my way or the highway" the best approach to take with your clients?

While client compliance can be frustrating, taking this type of hardline stance will alienate as many clients as it will potentially help.

When you take the science of psychology into account, one of the best ways to get client compliance is to match the client's unhealthy behavior to its root cause and then to suggest a healthier strategy that matches the same root cause.

In this week's Becoming the Ultimate Coach, Dr. Janine Stichter discusses the 4 root causes of behavior and why the hardline stance is a poor way to get consistent sustainable client compliance.

They go on to expand on the absolute need to expand your approach beyond such a simplistic technique.

  • Do Meal Plans Work? (Spoiler....No) | Behavior Change Fitness Podcast 2022 | BUC #16

Do you struggle with your clients struggling to follow/stick with a meal plan?

In this week's Becoming the Ultimate Coach, the Jock (Scott Schutte) and the Doc (Dr. Janine Stichter) discuss whether fitness coaches should give their clients meal plans.

Trying to get someone who averages ~20 grams of protein each day to increase that to 150grams/day is unrealistic and will all too often lead to failure.

Instead, you must remember Minimal Effective Dose (discussed all the way back in episode 3). What is the least amount you can change for your clients in order to get them to see results? That may be adding a scoop of collagen protein each day for 2 weeks to bump their protein intake from 20 to 40 grams per day.

Then slowly add other strategies to incrementally increase their protein to ultimately reach the end goal of around 150grams/day. Going back to last week's episode, the ultimate fitness coach goes beyond nutrition to take personality, lifestyle, and other factors into account when helping their clients set and reach their goals.

Some clients will thrive with the structure of a meal plan but in most cases, meal plans only add confusion and complicate things. Instead, teach your client to incrementally change their behaviors to the healthier side of the spectrum.
