In this episode of Wuxia Weekend we talk about Tsui Hark's Flying Swords of Dragon Gate. It stars Jet Li, Zhou Xun, Chen Kun, Gwei Lun-mei, Louis Fan, Li Yuchun, Mavis Fan, with appearances by Gordon Liu and Zhang Xinyu. This is the most recent Dragon Gate film, and is set after the events of New Dragon Inn.

Adam and I talk about Doctor Who Series 11, Episodes 5 (The Tsuranga Conundrum) and 6 (Demons of the Punjab). We didn't care for Tsuranga but both quite enjoyed Demons of the Punjab. Sadly we are a little behind schedule so this past Sunday's Doctor Who will have to wait until mid-week.

Adam and I review Bastard Swordsman, a wuxia film directed by Tony Liu Chun-Ku. It stars Norman Chu, Lau Wing, Leanne Lau Suet-Wah, Leung Ching-Ching, Alex Man, and Lo Meng. Made in 1983, it is on the more gonzo side of the Shaw Brothers spectrum, similar in some ways to Buddha's Palm or Holy Flame of the Martial World. However it is a little more grounded than other films of its kind.

Welcome to the first episode of Blood Sport Commando, where Steve and I talk about classic action and martial arts movies, with a focus on the 80s and 90s. Today we debate whether Daniel was a worthy competitor at the All-Valley Tournament in the first Karate Kid. I apologize for the sound quality on this episode (was unable to use my usual mic).

I talk with Adam about I, Claudius Episode 12: Old King Log. This is the final episode of I, Claudius. Both Adam and I were surprised just how much we misremembered. I think we both agreed, this finale was much better than we had originally recalled it to be.

I talk with Adam about the fourth episode of the 11th series of Doctor Who "Arachnids in the UK". Overall we liked the episode, but some of the subtext felt like it undermined the atmosphere and the story in places. Also both of us agreed that the tone could have been more consistent. We like humor in Doctor Who, and even in horror humor can work well, but this veered away from the atmospheric horror the episode establishes in the opening shot. Still we thought it was an entertaining episode and the spiders were quite effective.

We talk about Ho Meng-Hua's 1976 horror film Oily Maniac. In this film, Daniel Lee plays a man with polio who draws on the power of a ritual passed down by his father to protect the woman he loves.
