Written in 1845, Edgar Allan Poe’s The Oval Portrait is often compared to The Picture of Dorian Gray because that is the only other old timey story folks can think of. Honestly, I can’t name another one. But the Oval Portrait clings to the creepy aesthetic that readers of the Victorian author have come to love and one that surrounds a pretty spooky quote from Poe himself. 

In his book  “Philosophy of Composition,” Poe talks about how “poetry as art is the rhythmical creation of beauty, and that the most poetical topic in the world is the death of a beautiful woman”
