My mother emigrated here from Romania during the height of communism. Her mother had to flee Bassarabia, modern day Moldova, in her youth and then fled Romania as a senior. My mother retells some of her mother's story and some of her own anecdotes.

My mother grew up in Romania just after the Second World War, born 1946. Our family was on the losing side of the political upheaval that followed the war. As a consequence she grew up quite poor. The kind of poverty that hasn't existed in American since WWII. We also chat about some other minor topics. Enjoy.

I talk to my father. He was a mechanical engineer who worked in mass transit for close to fifty years. I have read a few articles online that put forth the idea that buses are a better form of public transport than rail. But when I visited Bogota, Columbia on a school trip the tranist authority there lamented the fact that they could not afford rail transit. I wanted to hear it from the horses mouth what the real deal was.
