  1. Number 1: Bee Science with Dewey Caron - Listening to the Bees

Do you listen to your bees? Beekeepers rely heavily on sight when inspecting a colony, along with touch and even smell. But in this installment of Bee Science with Dr. Dewey Caron, Dewey asks us to consider another source of information—the remarkable world of sound and vibration produced by honey bees. Honey bees live in an acoustic world that extends well beyond the familiar buzz we hear around a colony. Dewey explores how bees produce sound through their flight muscles and how they perceive airborne vibrations through their antennae and substrate-borne vibrations through their legs. He also explains why a queenless colony can sound noticeably different from a queenright colony and how experienced beekeepers can sometimes recognize changes within a colony simply by listening. Dewey then returns to the waggle dance, exploring research showing that sound and vibration are important components of honey bee communication. Recruits aren't simply following a dancer—they are receiving vibroacoustic information that helps communicate the distance to a food source. The science gets even more fascinating as Dewey examines stop signals, predator warnings, learning among young dancers, and acoustic communication in other honey bee species. Finally, Dewey traces the history of using colony sounds to understand bee behavior, from Eddie Woods' pioneering Apidictor in the 1950s to today's digital sensors, sophisticated microphones, and machine-learning systems designed to interpret what's happening inside a colony without unnecessarily opening the hive. The next time you're working your bees, don't just look. Listen. Your colony may be telling you more than you realize. This is Part One of Dewey's exploration of sound in honey bees. In Part Two, he'll return to some of the specialized sounds associated with swarming and communication. 2. Number 2: Using CO2 to Fight Varroa Mites with Aakash Manaswi (398)

What if carbon dioxide could offer beekeepers another way to control Varroa mites? In this episode, Jeff Ott and Becky Masterman talk with award-winning high school researcher Aakash Manaswi, whose multi-year research project investigates using carbon dioxide (CO₂) as a treatment against Varroa mites. Aakash traces his interest in honey bees back to a childhood visit to an apiary, where a beekeeper explained how Varroa was affecting his colonies. That encounter eventually led Aakash to ask whether there might be another way to tackle the parasite. Aakash explains the development of his CO₂ treatment prototype—a hive-top device that distributes carbon dioxide throughout a colony. His research progressed from laboratory testing of different CO₂ concentrations to prototype development and field trials comparing the approach with existing treatments. He discusses the 30% CO₂ concentration used in his research, treatment timing, effects on phoretic mites, and some of the important limitations that still need to be investigated. The conversation also explores Aakash's AI-based system for counting Varroa mites on sticky boards, his work with mentors at 3M, USDA, and the University of Florida, and where he hopes to take the research next. Aakash's work earned first place in Animal Sciences at the Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair and the Peggy Scripps Award for Science Communication. Before the interview, Jeff and Becky answer a listener question about another emerging tool for beekeepers: artificial intelligence. They discuss where AI can be genuinely useful—and why beekeepers should still question its answers, check its sources, and remember that sometimes the best answer in beekeeping remains, "It depends." 3. Number 3: Winning at Honey with Stephanie: Preparing Pollen for Competition

This month on Winning at Honey with Stephanie, Stephanie Slater turns her attention to a honey show category that doesn't appear at every competition: pollen. Preparing pollen for competition requires more than simply collecting it from a pollen trap. Stephanie walks through what judges look for, including cleanliness, proper moisture, aroma and flavor, consistent fill levels, and a colorful variety of pollen. She also shares lessons from her own first pollen entry—and the judge's comment card that showed her where she could improve. You'll learn how Stephanie collects and freezes pollen, uses a fan to separate lighter debris, hand-cleans small batches with tweezers, and prepares jars for judging. She also explains why you should bring extra pollen to the show to correct settling and fill levels before submitting your entry. Stephanie also discusses balancing pollen collection with the nutritional needs of the colony, including her practice of activating traps for only 24 hours before giving the bees several days of unrestricted pollen collection. Finally, this month's Honey Show Spotlight looks at upcoming competitions in Georgia, Alabama, North Carolina, and the 2026 Missouri State Beekeepers Association Fall Conference, where Stephanie will be helping with the honey show. Whether you're preparing your first pollen entry or looking for another category to add to your show bench, it's time to start cleaning those pollen pellets! Blue skies and blue ribbons! 4. Number 4: Varroa Treatment: Api-Bioxal RTU

The Varroa Treatment Series continues with another oxalic acid option: Api-Bioxal RTU, a ready-to-use liquid formulation designed for dribble application. Dr. David Peck of Betterbee joins Jeff and Becky to explain what makes RTU different from the traditional oxalic acid and sugar-syrup dribble beekeepers may already know. Instead of weighing, measuring, and mixing oxalic acid, RTU arrives premixed and ready for application at 5 milliliters per occupied seam of bees. David discusses why the glycerin-based formulation may remain active in the hive longer than a sugar-based dribble and how brood status affects its performance. In a broodless colony, RTU can serve as a powerful Varroa knockdown treatment. When capped brood is present, repeated applications can instead help bring mite populations down and hold them under control. The conversation covers the label's repeat-treatment schedule, application with honey supers present, shelf life and storage, temperature considerations, safety advantages compared with oxalic acid vaporization, and an important difference from homemade dribbles: RTU does not have the same 50-milliliter-per-colony maximum. As David emphasizes, Api-Bioxal RTU is another tool—not a universal solution—for building an effective Varroa management program. 5. Number 5: A Conversation with Beekeepers Quarterly (401)

Beekeeping challenges rarely stop at national borders. This week, Jeff and Becky cross the Atlantic for a conversation with Dr. Andrea Quigley and Norman Carreck, co-editors of the UK-based Beekeepers Quarterly. Norman, a longtime beekeeper and bee scientist, introduces listeners to the UK's extensive beekeeping education system and his work conserving the native dark European honey bee, Apis mellifera mellifera. The conversation explores what locally adapted honey bees can teach beekeepers about genetics, winter survival, colony size, temperament, and management. Andrea then takes us inside Beekeepers Quarterly, an independent, internationally focused magazine published by Northern Bee Books. She explains how the quarterly combines practical beekeeping, science, conservation, and perspectives from contributors around the world. The discussion also turns to two emerging threats with international implications: Tropilaelaps mites and the yellow-legged hornet. Norman and Andrea explain why early detection, understanding pest biology, and cooperation among researchers, government agencies, beekeepers, and the public matter—and what North American beekeepers might learn from the European experience. It's a wide-ranging conversation offering a decidedly international perspective on honey bees, beekeeping, research, and the challenges ahead.
