The much-heralded "Psychedelic Renaissance" is really "just" a renaissance in psychedelic research. The real societal psychedelic renaissance begins in just five years or so when these extraordinary substances will be rescheduled and become more widely available. In this talk, I'll review the current state of the research on the clinical use of psychedelics, and describe psychedelic integration, the popular new practice of "microdosing," and the concept of "ego-death." I'll highlight the relationship between the stages of developmental psychology and tribal rites of passage - both of which are facilitated by the loosening action of visionary substances and both of which represent mini- "deaths and rebirths" - and show how societal development mirrors personal development. We'll conclude with a discussion of the future of psychedelics policy and the big-picture implications of a re-introduction of psychedelics into Western civilization.
