Non-musical history for today: 1918 – The British Royal Navy raided the Belgian port of Bruges-Zeebrugge to neutralize it during WWI. This was an attempt to block access to and from the port by intentionally sinking ships to block the canal entrance, thus preventing its use by German ships and submarines. Eight participants in the raid were awarded the Victoria Cross.

Non-musical history for today: Five high school students in San Rafael, California, coined the term “4:20” as part of their 1971 search for an abandoned cannabis crop, based on a treasure map made by the supposed grower. Calling themselves the “Waldos,” because their typical hang-out spot “was a wall outside the school”, Steve Capper, Dave Reddix, Jeffrey Noel, Larry Schwartz, and Mark Gravich designated the Louis Pasteur statue on the grounds of San Rafael High School as their meeting place, and 4:20 p.m. as their meeting time. The Waldos referred to this plan with the phrase “4:20 Louis”. After several failed attempts to find the crop, the group eventually shortened their phrase to “4:20”, which ultimately evolved into a code word the teens used to refer to consuming cannabis-related products.

Non-musical history for today: 1943 – Albert Hofmann deliberately dosed himself with LSD for the first time, three days after having discovered its effects on April 16, an event commonly known and celebrated as Bicycle Day. It’s called that because he had asked his assistant to accompany him home, which they did on bicycles. He began to “trip” and struggled getting home.

Non-musical history for today: 1943 – Albert Hofmann accidentally discovered the hallucinogenic effects of the research drug LSD. He intentionally took a potent dose of the drug a few days later. He used it throughout the rest of his life. He died at 102 in 2008.

Non-musical history for today: 1947 – Jackie Robinson debuted for the Brooklyn Dodgers, breaking baseball’s color line. On opening day 2023, Major League Baseball (MLB) rosters showed a significant ethnic diversity, with 40.3% of players coming from diverse backgrounds, including 6.2% Black, 30.2% Latino/Hispanic, 3.2% Asian, 0.53% Pacific Islander/Native Hawaiian, and 0.21% Native American. Still, and I found this hard to believe, 60.5% are white.

Non-musical history for today: 1900 – The world’s fair Exposition Universelle opened in Paris. Some exhibitions for this exposition were: Grande Roue de Paris, a Ferris wheel that was, at the time, the largest ever built; La Rue de l’Avenir, a moving sidewalk, much like the ones you find in airports, but outside; the first ever regular passenger trolleybus line; escalators; diesel engines; electric cars; dry cell batteries,; electric fire engines; talking films; the telegraphone (the first magnetic audio recorder);  the galalith (a synthetic plastic) and the matryoshka (Russian nesting) dolls. It was also what kicked off the Art Nouveau movement. I would have loved to have been there.

Also, in 1865 – President Abraham Lincoln was shot in Ford’s Theatre by John Wilkes Booth. Booth went on the lam and was caught twelve days later. Well, “caught” is a funny word. He died the same way Lincoln did, but in a burning barn by a soldier.
