Non-musical history for today: 1831 – First documented bank heist in U.S. history, when burglars stole $245,000 (1831 values) from the City Bank (now Citibank) on Wall Street. Most of the money was recovered. I find old-timey bank robberies fascinating. There’s no style or grace to it these days. The “kids” today just brandish (or don’t) a gun and usually are sloppy. There’s something romantic about the old ones. Not condoning the action or saying it’s right, but there’s just something storied about them. But, it goes without saying… DON’T!

Non-musical history for today: 1985 – Serial killer Richard Ramirez, aka the “Night Stalker”, committed the first two murders in his Los Angeles murder spree. His official numbers aren’t clear, but at least 15 were attributed to him. He was caught in 1985 after being chased and eventually caught by civilians who had recognized him from newspapers. They tackled him, held him down, and beat him. He was “saved” by the police officers who responded to the disturbance. He was sentenced to death, but died in prison from blood cancer before his execution.

On a potentially higher note, tonight is a drinking holiday; an amateur drinking holiday. So, make sound choices if you’re drinking. Don’t operate vehicles if you drink and watch out for those who don’t heed that warning. Stay safe, y’all!

Non-musical history for today: 44 BC – The assassination of Julius Caesar, the dictator of the Roman Republic, by a group of senators took place on the Ides of March. Because I was wondering why it’s not used more often, the word Ides derives from idus (meaning “half-division” or “middle”), which historically marked the full moon. And it IS actually used for May, July, and October, in addition to March, to mean the 15th of the month. The other months all have ides, too; on the 13th of each month. Beware the Ides of February, just doesn’t have the same ring.
