Non-musical history for today: 1587 – Mary, Queen of Scots, is executed on suspicion of having been involved in the Babington Plot to murder her cousin, Queen Elizabeth I. She didn’t, but that didn’t stop Liz I. I know I talk about this a lot because my wife is a huge MQoS fan. Mary’s son, James VI (of Scotland) and I (of England and Ireland) avenged her in a way. When he took over had them buried in crypts across the hall from each other. Take that, Auntie Liz!

Non-musical history for today: 1919 – Charlie Chaplin, Mary Pickford, Douglas Fairbanks, and D. W. Griffith launched United Artists. UA was a venture premised on allowing actors to control their own financial and artistic interests rather than being dependent upon commercial studios. It lasted a good while until 1967 when Transamerica (yep, the life insurance company) bought it. That’s why UA’s films had the Transamerica tower at the beginning. In 1981, MGM bought it. That went on until MGM kind of let it go “out on its own” a few years back when Amazon became the parent company of MGM and folded UA back into MGM. (deep breath) whew!

Non-musical history for today: 1887 – In Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, the first Groundhog Day is observed. Obviously, not the same groundhog, but that baloney still happens to this day. It is almost the same thing, but in religious terms, it relates to the lore that clear weather on the Christian festival of Candlemas forebodes a prolonged winter. And, if we’re getting to something that I would observe, if anything, would be Imbolc. That happened yesterday. Imbolc falls roughly halfway between the winter solstice and the spring equinox (the exact mid-point ― the ‘solar imbolc’ ― usually falls on the 3rd or 4th of February) and is one of the four Gaelic seasonal festivals, along with Bealtaine, Lughnasadh, and Samhain. Each of which is an “in between” festival.

Non-musical history for today: 1960 – Four black students staged the first of the Greensboro sit-ins at a Woolworth’s lunch counter in Greensboro, North Carolina. That happened about 25-30 minutes away from where I live. Such a strong and noble jesture. It didn’t go so well that day, I don’t think, but it did help eventually. It certainly led to the department store chain removing its policy of racial segregation in the Southern United States. Shout out to The Greensboro Four (as they would soon be known): Joseph McNeil, Franklin McCain, Ezell Blair Jr., and David Richmond!
