Non-musical history for today: 1793 – French Revolution: Queen Marie Antoinette was executed. Preparing for her execution, she had to change clothes in front of her guards. She wanted to wear a black dress but was forced to wear a plain white dress, white being the color worn by the widowed queens of France. Her hair was shorn, her hands bound painfully behind her back, and she was put on a rope leash. She rode an open-air carriage for over an hour, getting jeered and booed by the common folk. A clergyman was assigned to her, but she refused to talk to him or make any last confessions. She accidentally stepped on the executioner's shoe and reportedly said, "Pardonnez-moi, monsieur. Je ne l'ai pas fait exprès" or "Pardon me, sir, I did not do it on purpose." Anna Marie Tussaud, yes, Madame Tussaud, was commissioned to make her death mask after being separated from her head. Mon dieu!
