In today's episode on counseling certifications, I discuss my opinions on certifications from the tobacco training specialist certification compared to the Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)certification. I discuss the process of each one as well as how to apply and obtain them. I also discuss my thoughts on the pros and cons of each one.
In today's episode, I go over many problematic scenarios that a residential treatment addiction counselor may encounter when dealing with a client's behavior, transferring a client to another facility, and interacting and collaborating with probation officers and other health care professionals on providing optimal care for the client.
In today's episode, I discuss topics regarding substance abuse treatment centers from the staff and client's perspective. I get into the initial documentation that is required for a client to be in substance abuse treatment. I also get into procedures regarding inventory and bag checks. I give my personal viewpoint on the initial intake procedures and what can be done to improve it. I express my perspective on high-intensity treatment and the process to transition a client to the medium level intensity and what is required by the substance abuse counselor and the client to make those transitions to a lower level of care.

In today's episode, I interview a former classmate of mine from Adler Graduate School Samantha Knight. Samantha has her Bachelor of Science degree in addiction counseling at Metropolitan State University as well as her Master of Arts Degree in Adlerian Counseling and psychotherapy with an emphasis on clinical mental health counseling. Samantha is also the owner and CEO of "Breakthrough Wellness Center." The interview involved many different concepts of multicultural awareness and issues counselors have when working with minority populations. Throughout the episode, Samantha gives many great ideas and interventions on how the counseling profession can aid in helping the minority population with mental health and addiction issues as well as great ideas on how we as a society can influence and encourage more minorities to be a part of the behavioral health field as mental health and addiction therapist. Samantha also gets into systemic issues the behavioral health field has in helping the minority population. Samantha also explained what motivated her to start her own behavioral health facility and what steps she took to develop and create it. It was truly a pleasure having her on my show.

I interviewed Therissa Libby who is an Associate Professor and Co-Coordinator, Graduate Programs in Counseling, Metropolitan State University. Therissa works in collaboration with Metropolitan State University on the Recovery Narratives Project and Minnesota Recovery Connection. The Recovery Narratives Project is an inquiry into experiences of recovery from substance use and mental health disorders. The episode entailed myself and Therissa Libby getting into topics and conversations that involved what true recovery may mean for each person struggling with addiction and mental health issues. We get into topics on how individuals in the mental health addiction field need to make more money as well as some ideas on how to do it. Throughout the episode, we went into topics of harm reduction that included the benefits of opioid replacement therapy with the use of methadone and suboxone. We also challenge many of the stigmas not just society has on individuals with addictions but stigmas that healthcare professionals have on clients in their recovery. We also get into controversial topics as it comes to the use of MDMA as well as other psychedelics as an intervention for people struggling with mental health and substance abuse disorders. I just have to say it was a true honor and blessing having Therissa on my podcast. I hope to work with her again down the road.

This BHI Episode is based on poor management in the behavioral health field. This episode will get into an actual scenario I was presented with as a CTSS worker. Throughout the episode, I will explain the situation myself and my co-worker were in and how the CTSS supervisor and therapist on the case reacted to the situation in a negative and unprofessional manner. I then get into further details on how the situation could have been handled in a different manner.
I will discuss the process that most individuals go through to become admitted into an outpatient treatment program. The basic concepts of Rule 25 are addressed as an assessment tool to help the assessor gather information to help determine if an individual is a good fit for an outpatient substance abuse treatment program. Throughout the episode, I also give my opinion and feedback on the issues I see outpatient facilities go through and what could possibly be done to help them. I also get into concepts of good quality coordination of care and how it is beneficial for the clients and staff of a treatment center. I also get into further discussion on my opinion on what clients may benefit from outpatient treatment and the ones that may not through my experience working as a licensed alcohol drug counselor (LADC).
