Russia's military intervention in and bombing of Ukraine has been condemned the world over. Calls are mounting for Russia to immediately withdraw its military from Ukraine and for all parties to return to diplomacy to de-escalate and resolve the crisis.

However, the conflict cannot be understood outside the relentless drive by the United States and its Western allies to expand NATO up to Russia’s border and encircle it militarily.
