As midterms mania deprives us of our sanity, reactionaries are already apologizing for democratic politicians who are starting to walk back their anti-establishment rhetoric before they are even in office. We are stuck grappling with the possibility there is no voting our way out of any of this and the lives our parents promised us might not actually pan out. So let’s have a little chat.

To learn about indigenous history is to learn that the foundational myth of the United States is that the American Revolution wasn’t actually a revolution, it was instead a fight over colonial sovereignty. Colonial elites wanted to expand west beyond Appalachia while the British imperialists, concerned with the maintenance of Empire, did not have the patience to fight another costly frontier war that would gain them little.

It’s also to learn that if the British prosecuted the war the colonists did against the indigenous tribes, or how they prosecuted campaigns in Africa or India, which were inherently g-sidal - there would be no United States.

But you can’t biological warfare, mass starve, and immolate your third cousins and return to London society with martial honor. Because the colonists were humans. The First Nations, the Africans, the peoples of Hindustan, were not.

So when conservatives adjacent to the Palestine movement say - we’ve been Israelified. This isn’t who we are, we’re occupied. What do you mean - this has always been what we’ve done. The mask off of the Trump administration is simply us coming back to ourselves minus all the post-Vietnam civil rights window dressing.

Our society exhibits a suicidal lack of empathy. We are witnessing mass death, violence, displacement on a global scale, all normalized and obfuscated by generations of bourgeois media and propaganda.

How do we begin to push back against it in order to fight for a more sane, sustainable, and equitable world? In this episode of Colonial Outcasts we go inside the isolated and near-invisible world of US women’s prisons with former defense attorney and photojournalist Sarah Bennet.

She is the author of “Looking Inside: Women with Life Sentences,” a long-term photographic project about women convicted of homicide and sentenced to life in New York State. The book follows them inside prison, after release, and in everyday life afterward, using portraits plus personal materials like letters, drawings, Polaroids, and handwritten notes to show that they are more than the crime that led to their sentences. The project resists stereotypes and asks readers to consider how punishment, memory, identity, and rehabilitation shape a life over decades.

She is the author of The State of Resistance: Politics, Culture, and Identity in Modern Iran (Cambridge University Press, 2022) and Don’t Say Palestine: How the Media Manufactured Consent for Genocide (Vintage, 2026). Assal completed a PhD in History from the University of California, Irvine in 2018.
