This season, Behind the Lines will focus primarily on the future of the profession. We start the season off by exploring current and potential future trends impacting (1) energy lawyers; (2) women in the law; (3) attorney wellness; and (4) students taking the bar exam. 

Segment One - What’s Next for Energy Law: From the AI Data Center Gold Rush to Tomorrow’s Grid

Guest: Joshua Belcher

Length: 21 minutes

Belcher, a partner a Holland & Knight who is directly involved in data center projects, delves into impact of AI data centers, addressing changes in the energy law space that are being driven by the development of large AI data centers, such as power procurement, increased demand for all types of energy sources, new business in adjacent industries, changes in permitting and interconnection policies, and increased deal complexity. As far as what the future holds, Belcher notes that AI data centers are driving massive investment in new technologies for alternative power and long-duration storage, and he anticipates a lot of development and change over the next ten years in how we power this country. Belcher also provides advice for younger lawyers and students who may be interested in his practice area and addresses how AI may impact those opportunities. 

Segment Two - What’s Next for Women in the Law: Updating the Championship Model for Today and the Future 

Guest: Alissa Rubin Gomez

Length: 26 minutes

Gomez, a Clinical Professor at University of Houston Law Center, wrote an article called the “Mismeasure of Success” that considers retention of women in law firms from a “feminist” perspective, meaning through a lens that considers points of view that are often left out. Gomez discusses traditional law firm models, which often using the “championship model,” how the pandemic impacted views of this model, why law firms may want to rethink this model's view of what “success” looks like, and how the rise in generative AI impacts and in fact encourages consideration of new models. She also discusses what she’d like law firms to look like ten years from now.

Segment Three - What’s Next for Attorney Wellness: AI-Driven Cognitive Overloads Create Increased Wellness Concern

Guest: Wayne Basist

Length: 23 minutes, 15 minutes ethics

Basist, Founder of ESQ Mental Fitness, shares his personal story of how a severe car accident derailed his legal career and led to an arduous and painful recovery journey, including dealing with addiction and intense emotional struggles related to the trauma. During recovery, Basist realized that recurring thought patterns were causing him to be overly stressed and anxious even before the accident, leading him to eventually refocus his career on wellness. Basist then addresses current statistics about lawyer wellbeing, including perfectionism, sleep disruptions, anxiety, burnout, depression, suicide ideation, and substance and alcohol abuse. He also notes concern about how the rise in AI is causing additional cognitive overloads for attorneys as we adjust to how it's changing our profession and why these pressures lead to increased ethical dilemmas. He ends with a mindfulness technique that may be helpful to attorneys who are feeling this type of stress or overload. 

Segment Four - What’s Next for the Bar Exam: Local Law Schools Prepare for the Next Gen Exam

Guests: Ronda Harrison and Megan Davis*

This episode focuses on juveniles and juvenile law, starting with a discussion with a prosecutor and defense attorney who work in the juvenile justice system. They discuss their work, provide legal updates, and offer some sage advice for parents. Parenting teen-agers has its challenges for parents, and certainly teens with lawyer parents likely think that has its challenges as well. This inaugural “Coffee & Counsel” segment includes three lawyers discussing having teen-aged children: Chastity Horne (Horne Rota Moos), Courtney Ervin (Hicks Thomas), and Derek Hollingsworth (Drumheller, Hollingsworth, & Monthy). While there is some legal information included in the discussion, such as what advice to give a teen who is learning to drive, it is also just a discussion among parents who want what is best for their children.

Younger lawyer parents will also benefit from the wisdom of these more seasoned parents!

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas here in Houston, and in this episode it’s beginning to look a lot like divorce -- along with other family law topics. This episode brings advice for family lawyers and pro bono attorneys who find themselves working on a family law case, and it also may serve as a resource for self-represented litigants in family court.  

Segment One:  Best Practices in Family Court for Family Lawyers, Pro Bono Attorneys, and Self-Represented Litigants

Judge Gloria E. Maisha Colter, Chief Executive Officer of AVDA-Texas, talks about how to obtain a domestic violence protective order, provides statutory updates related to obtaining these orders, and addresses issues pro bono or self-represented litigants should be aware of if they end up with a case that may involve domestic violence issues. Service Spotlight: Finding Time to Have a Heart and Raise Awareness

Kelly LaPar (Senior Counsel for NRG Energy, Inc. in Operation and Generation) and Dr. Damian LaPar (Chief of Pediatric and Congenital Heart Surgery, Executive Co-Director of the UTHealth Houston Children’s Heart Institute, and Professor in the Department of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery at McGovern Medical School) are co-chairing the American Heart Association - Houston Chapter's Houston Heart Ball this February. They address the importance of giving back and how to find the time to do that, and they provide some tips (and potential New Year's resolutions) for cardiovascular wellness. It is a timely and important topic for Houston lawyers. 

Segment Three: When Practice Areas Intersect: Immigration and Family Law

Behind-the-Lines interviewer Rinku Ray talks with Ana Maria Schwartz (Principal of Schwartz Immigration Law, PLLC) about the ways immigration law and family law intersect and provides important insight into immigration issues family lawyers may need to be aware of. This is a very interesting interview that should be of interest to all lawyers. 

Segment Four: The Nuts & Bolts of Guardianship Cases, A Rewarding Pro Bono Experience

One year after the Texas Business Court and 15th Court of Appeals opened, and one year after our "Taking Care of Business" episode, Texas courts and Texas lawyers are still taking care of business. • Energy Law Update. Jana Grauberger (co-leader of the Energy Practice Group at Liskow & Lewis) discusses issues impacting Houston energy lawyers, such as the impact of the One Big Beautiful Bill Act on oil and gas leasing in the Gulf and legal concerns related to the endangered Rice's whale. She also provides tips for young lawyers and students who are interested in the energy industry. (25 min.)
• Health Law Update. Megan Neel (DumasNeel) provides an update on what is happening in health care law in Houston, including the new non-compete law and updates to Texas law governing medical spas.
