We were joined this week by Dr. Mark Ferro, Professor and Researcher out of the University of Waterloo and Canadian Research Chair in Youth Mental Health. Dr. Ferro chatted with us about how to went from an undergraduate degree in Biochemistry to a PhD in Child Psychiatry; his initial research interests in paediatric epilepsy and how that expanded into a broader analysis of the associations between physical and mental health in young people; and the importance of early, positive interventions and support for our Youth. Dr. Raywat Deonandan, Epidemiologist and Science Communicator, joined us this week for Episode 4 of Behind The Numbers! Dr. Deonandan specializes in global health and has recently made a name for himself within mainstream media as a COVID-informant / expert-in-the-field. He chats with us about the pros and cons of how the pandemic has been handled so far, the overall need for better communication, and simple ways that all students and professionals within Epidemiology can help our communities. Dr. Deonandan also tells us which areas in global health he thinks will improve post-COVID, as well as why we should not necessarily fear this pandemic but should definitely respect it and continue doing our part in staying safe! How are climate change, traumatic injuries, and obesity linked? Dr. Ian Roberts of the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine joins us this week to talk about the severe repercussions of society's shift towards motorized transportation. He speaks about his book, The Energy Glut, which touches on the need for a more sustainable and street-friendly environment. Dr. Roberts also tells us about his CRASH trials, which were pivotal in showing the benefits of tranexamic acid (TXA) in reducing hemorrhage in trauma patients. His latest paper, TraumaINTACT, even touches on the benefits of intramuscular TXA - a finding that has significant potential in enhancing hemorrhage treatment in the prehospital setting. Lastly, Dr. Roberts finishes off by telling us about the next steps with his CRASH-4 trial.

This week we are joined by Dr. Michael Hill, world renowned Stroke researcher with the Hotchkiss Brain Institute of the University of Calgary. Dr. Hill chatted with us about one of his most iconic trials, ESCAPE, which was the Canadian effort of the HERMES Collaboration to show that Endovascular Therapy (EVT) is an effective treatment method for ischemic strokes. This open-label blinded-outcome, randomized control trial was a profound success, with results showing a 50% reduction in mortality rates! We then discussed the promising results of his following trial, ESCAPE-NA1, and Dr. Hill gave us a sneak peak as to what he has planned next. Enjoy!
