This week, Melissa Brumbelow, a 10-year breast cancer survivor joined us on the podcast. She shared that she was one of two patients at her OBGYN's office recommended for genetic testing due to significant family history. Melissa was positive for a genetic mutation. She thought she had some time to be closely monitored before a diagnosis of cancer would happen. But a month later, through an exam with breast oncologist, Melissa was told she didn't have time to wait- cancer was there already.

On this week's episode, Dani Grass, a 2-time cancer survivor, shared her journey through cancer- not once but twice. She was diagnosed in 2005 at the age of 21 years with colon cancer. Just over 10 years later, she was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2016 at the age of 31. Dani shared her journey through both cancers, the struggles of dealing with cancer at a young age, and her husband who has stood by her side through both cancer diagnoses.

Monique Colwell, a 2 year breast cancer survivor, joined us on the podcast today. She talked about having a firmness in her breast that she thought was odd but was dismissed by her doctor because of her age, her body structure, and a lack of family history for breast cancer. Monique pushed to have diagnostic testing and was told that she had stage 0 cancer. After seeking out a second opinion, she learned that she had stage 3 breast cancer. Monique shares her journey and where she found support.

On this episode, I had the opportunity to talk with Julie Caputo. She was diagnosed in March 2019 with Stage 2B invasive lobular cancer at the age of 49. A pain in her left side led her to get a mammogram but was unrelated to her eventual diagnosis of cancer. Julie shares her very fresh journey through breast cancer, the treatments she has already had and those planned for the near future. She has found support in her family, family, and friends, and through her unrelenting positivity.

On this episode, I had the opportunity to talk with Nikki Speer, founder of Redefined Courage, a nonprofit organization providing post-mastectomy shirts to breast cancer survivors at no cost. Nikki shared her family history of breast cancer including her mother's story of battling breast cancer three times, which was the inspiration behind the organization. Nikki hopes that each woman receiving a box knows that they are cared for, loved, thought about, and never alone.

While she didn't necessarily think that it was breast cancer, she knew that it was a possibility. Shanna shares her experience of going through breast cancer, finding support through her husband, family, and friends, and creating new friendships during chemo. Shanna talks about how she uses her experience to help others in her career as a Nurse Practitioner.

My paternal cousin, Candace, joined us on this episode today. She shared her story of being diagnosed with stage 1 breast cancer following a routine mammogram, undergoing a bilateral mastectomy and hysterectomy within 6 months of each other, and then having to be explanted 11 months after her mastectomy due to a negative reaction.

My friend, Christine McCoy, joined us on the podcast today. She shared her story of finding her lump during a self-breast exam. Christine contacted her doctor and was dismissed because she was too young and didn't have any risk factors. She saw her PCP the next day and was told it was likely not cancer, but was sent for diagnostic testing. It was in fact cancer! She shared her course of treatment and the importance of having someone that can help with keeping track of information at appointments.

Kim Nolder, a Pittsburgh native residing in North Carolina, joined us on the podcast today. She shares her story of finding her breast cancer on her baseline mammogram. Kim's mother had been diagnosed with breast cancer and passed away when she was 60 years old. As a result, Kim has always been on top of her overall and breast health. She shares her course of treatment and talks about the importance of being healthy for her boys.

Nikki Nims, my friend, and fellow SCAR Project model joined us on the podcast today. She shares her story of being 33-weeks pregnant with a surrogate baby when she found her lump while showering. She talked about the diagnostic screenings, getting the diagnosis while at a routine visit with her OB, going into survival mode, and her course of treatment. Nikki discusses her regrets with not being more particular with the plastic surgeon and looking at all of the reconstructive options. She shares the struggles with friends, family, and strangers that make judgments and comments that are insulting. Nikki shared her experience as a model for the ScarProject and also talks about the bond that she has with the surrogate baby that she says saved her life.
