Behind The Podcast

Today we’re talking to Paul Cochrane about his moving and important podcast, Childers

So many of the people we speak to talk about the importance of finding a subject that’s close to you and this story was very close to Paul. 20 years ago he had his first assignment as a journalist covering the arson attack of the Childers Hostel in Queensland which claimed the lives of 15 backpackers.

It is an incredible achievement for a first time podcast, including being a finalist in the Australian Podcast Awards

This episode we are joined by one of the best - Ian Walker the Executive Producer and the brains behind one of Australia’s most successful podcast franchises - Unravel.

Unravel Season 4 - Snowball just won Best True Crime Podcast at the Australian Podcast Awards

Podcasts like Homecoming are seen as trailblazers in terms of podcasts becoming TV shows, but you can make the case the Unravel series is truly groundbreaking. Originally pitched as 2 seasons of TV and 3 seasons of podcast.

Here is the website with all things Unravel Season 4 - Snowball

We highly recommend giving the trailer a listen.

When we started behind the podcast part of our excitement was getting the story behind some of the biggest podcasts around, but what really piqued our interest was talking to the smaller, independent podcast creators.

There are none better than the team behind - In My Country - Adam Wood and Pia Perversi-Burchall.

We hear a lot about refugees & asylum seekers, but not often do we hear from the people themselves. In My Country tells these stories so effectively that they won Best Interview at the 2020 Australian Podcast Awards for their episode Alyas which we recommend as a great place to jump into the series.

One of the great things about the medium is that once in a while, you get one that makes a difference.

The Wigs is one such podcast.

This episode we talk to Jim Minns the producer of the Wigs podcast.

Jim is a career storyteller creating feature films being the videographer for people like Jacinda Arden.

The Wigs is a monthly podcast exploring and interrogating contemporary legal issues in and out of the courtroom.

The first and only podcast (so far) featuring practising barristers talking shop. Each episode they deep dive into the scenarios and outcomes that make up our legal system.

One such scenario was the BLM protests in Sydney in mid 2020

If you want to try out an episode of the Wigs. We recommend this episode
