The American Alliance for Theatre & Education (AATE) and the Educational Theatre Association (EdTA), has declared March as Theatre in Our Schools (TIOS) Month. One of the goals of the TIOS initiative is to raise public awareness of the impact of theatre education and draw attention to the need for more access to quality programs in and out of school for all students. Ian Finley is a professional actor, playwright, and educator. As the Chair of Fine Arts at Research Triangle High School, he has seen first-hand the benefits of exposing young people to the arts and how arts programs enhance science, technology, engineering, and math or STEM curriculums and project-based learning. Finley’s mother was a working actress and although he found himself performing at an early age, it wasn’t until high school that he says he truly found his calling.
