What happens when you spend years running from God… only to realize He’s been waiting for you to come home?
In this episode of Beneath the Surface, Danny sits down with Kaycee for a raw and deeply personal conversation about addiction, trauma, depression, self-destruction, sobriety, faith, and what it really means to experience freedom.
Kaycee grew up as a homeschooled church girl. But somewhere along the way, knowing about God became very different from actually knowing Him.
So she ran.
Alcohol. Drugs. Self-harm. Depression. Brokenness. Trying to fill a void that nothing seemed to satisfy.
Until one day, sitting in her car, she finally cried out:
“I need You. I can’t do this without You. Please help me.”
And she heard:
“Daughter, it’s time to come home.”
That moment became the beginning of a completely different story.
But recovery wasn’t simply about getting sober.
It meant confronting the things underneath the addiction. Learning the difference between guilt, shame, and conviction. Finding community. Facing temptation. Relearning how to see herself. And discovering what it means to live from God’s perspective instead of constantly being consumed by her own.
Kaycee also shares one of the most powerful moments of her journey — being three months sober, on her way to church, and suddenly realizing:
“I’m so glad I didn’t kill myself.”
For someone who once felt lost, broken, and empty, being grateful to still be alive became part of her testimony.
This conversation isn’t about pretending the past didn’t happen.
It’s about realizing the past doesn’t have to be the end of your story.
It’s about faith and recovery.
It’s about surrender and transformation.
It’s about community, truth, and learning to walk in freedom.
And ultimately, it’s about what can happen when you stop running and finally come home.
If you’ve ever felt too broken, too ashamed, too far gone, or like you need to fix yourself before coming to God, we hope this conversation reminds you:
You don’t have to get better before you come to Jesus. You come to Jesus to get better.
Sometimes healing begins with simply saying:
“I need You.”
