February is Heart month and Oral Health Month. Many of us may not know that there is a close connection between oral health and heart health. According to the British Heart Foundation often times when we refer to bacteria we think about bacteria and gut health but recent discourse suggest that there is just as much bacteria in our mouths as there is in our guts. The British Heart Foundation  emphasizes that some bacteria is normal but the type of bacteria in our mouths is what makes a difference and can lead to gum disease and other oral health issues. Discourse indicates that oral health issue can ultimately lead to heart related health  issues (British Heart Foundation, 2023). It's that time of year where the children get out of school for holiday break and the hustle and bustle of the season amps up. As we navigate the hustle and bustle, creating quick easy healthy meals for our children can become taxing. In addition, some of us get so caught up in getting ready for the holiday that we forget that this time is also for our children to enjoy time off, family time, and all around good holiday fun. However, we can come up with routines and activities that help us bring food, children and family connection all together. This could be simply developing family routines that include the whole family in grocery planning and shopping, meal time preparation, ways to eat healthy, activities that you can do during meal time and more. Dear Listeners,

The holiday season is here! For some of us this is a time of Christmas fun; for some this may be a time of grief and for others this may not be a holiday they celebrate. During this time many of us are on break from work and the children are out of school. One thing's for sure, many of us tend to use this time to come together with our families whether they be biological, extended or chosen family. Many of us enjoy lots of food, fun games, connection and comradery but for some these gatherings can be stressful, triggering, cause anxiety, or bring back bad memories. It is important to remember that we are all different and though we may all crave connection and belonging through family our mental capacity and needs may vary. Bermuda, as you step into this holiday season consider how you can promote family connection in a positive way, consider your own mental health needs, and remember that we're all different and have different needs.

Dear Listeners,

Annually on December 1st we commemorate World Aids Day. This years theme is “Overcoming disruption, transforming the AIDS response (UNAIDS, 2025)." This theme highlights the impact that funding cuts have had on the response to AIDS and the importance of overcoming the disruption this may cause (UNAIDS, 2025). World AIDS day also serves as an opportunity to remind us that education, using protective measures, screening and early detection can prevent the spread and contribute to better quality of life for those living with HIV. It reminds us that HIV does not have to lead to AIDS. This year reminds us that funding and resources lead to AIDS response that can save lives.

Dear Listeners,

November is diabetes awareness month. This is a time to raise awareness, promote prevention, and support those affected by the condition. There are several types of diabetes including Type 1 diabetes, type 2 diabetes, gestational diabetes, etc. Todays focus is gestational diabetes. The NHS characterizes gestational diabetes as the onset of high blood sugar during pregnancy which occurs as a result of the body's inability to produce enough insulin. It typically occurs in the third trimester of pregnancy and can lead to problems for mom and baby (NHS, 2022). Gestational diabetes usually goes away after mom gives birth but it can lead to longer term implications for mom like type 2 diabetes (NHS, 2022). Bermuda, knowledge is power and early detection means early intervention. This information is not just important for women who plan to have babies, and expecting moms, it is important for us all to know. It is helpful so that we can support those around us from family to friends and neighbors.
