It has been said that greed for gold is a fat demon with a small mouth -- whatever you feed it is never enough.

A wagon train coming through Fort Laramie is bound for he Oregon Trail. Of course there is also the nearby Bozeman Trail which travels further north through the Montana Territory.

By treaty, wagon trains are prohibited on the Bozeman Trail since it cuts through the Powder River Basin -- the last and best hunting grounds of the Norther Plains Indians.

But gold was recently discovered in Montana territory; gold that can make men rich. And some pioneers wanted their share, Indians be damned.

Mrs. Carpenter is a contentious wife who prefers to keep her husband under constant control. In great detail she has planned every minute of their trip and she is quite annoyed that Herbert is not following in lock-step. Rather, he's wasting time in the cellar working on some ridiculous botanical project.

Hermione has advised all of her friends that they will be back for Christmas. Professor Carpenter, however, has other ideas.

We then learn that Betty, on the other hand, has just split up with her boyfriend. And it seems her problem is very closely connected to Bud's.

As they are crossing the street, however, they are confronted by a stranger who says he is there to shoot the man he calls "preacher."

Dramatic story with a moving ending.

After some time listening to Marcus, they realize he is talking about something serious. After some pressure from the two detectives Paul finally confesses to killing Lorraine Farrell, his girlfriend.

The problem is, there is just something about the young man's story that doesn't quite add up.

After a brief discussion, Randy is intrigued and follows her to a local nightclub where he learns she is a singer. When she abruptly leaves the stage in tears, Randy learns the reason: Her boyfriend is in prison and is scheduled to be executed in a couple of hours.

Concerned, Randy tracks her back to her apartment where she eventually reveals the background story that has led her to this tragedy.

When the Benson and Duvall end up mysteriously dead, Matt tries to figure out who is doing the killing.
