Jesus indicates in this passage that He is doing something new. The irrelevant and heartless observations, rituals, and ceremonies of the religious crowd wouldn't do it anymore - Jesus was going to start over new.

There is a great contrast between the self-righteousness and hard-heartedness of the Pharisees, and the mercy and compassion of Jesus seen in this passage. Jesus' love for the the publicans, sinners, and the undesirables, is on full display.

In this passage, Jesus responds to the faith of the paralytic's friends, and shows to all the mans greatest need was not simply physical healing but a spiritual one.
