We live in a culture obsessed with fixing our bodies while ignoring what's happening inside us. We medicate our anxiety, chase physical health, and still end up the most anxious, unhappy people in our nation's history. Could it be that we're solving the wrong problem?

In this message delivered at Bethel Baptist Church, Pastor Marty Beamer continues our summer study in Proverbs, turning to the fifth offer of wisdom: health. Working through the text in reverse order, he first unpacks what biblical health actually means—avoiding the two ditches of over-spiritualizing it into mere metaphor and under-spiritualizing it into a prosperity-gospel formula. Wisdom Promises Wholeness. True health, as Scripture defines it, is neither purely physical nor purely spiritual—it is the union of mind, body, and spirit. Following the pattern of David in Psalm 38, we see that sin brings real consequences to both our inner and outer lives, and that repentance brings real restoration, even now, with full healing promised in the resurrection to come.

Pride Threatens Wholeness. The greatest danger to our spiritual health is not our circumstances but our pride—manifesting as we grow proud of our own wisdom, strive for independence from God and others, and quietly justify our own sin. Even our guilt over these things can become another mask for pride.

Ultimately, this message reminds us that wholeness is not found by looking further inward at ourselves—not even in our repentance—but by looking upward to Christ, who humbled Himself to the point of death and was highly exalted. Come to Him, bow low, and receive the wholeness only He can give.

How do we obtain wisdom? Proverbs chapter 2 is all about attaining wisdom and the sign that you have acquired it.

Obtaining wisdom requires total submission to God's Word. This means not coming to Scripture with a critical attitude or lack of trust. Gaining wisdom requires total submission to God and full devotion to Christ.

Obtaining wisdom also requires crying out for it. God hears those who submit to him, so cry out to him for wisdom.

Obtaining wisdom requires relentless pursuit. Proverbs calls us to seek wisdom and act in obedience.

Wisdom leads to understanding the fear of the Lord and discovering the knowledge of God. Wisdom itself is not the prize, but the fear and knowledge of God. Christ Himself is the wisdom of God.

The Foundation of Wisdom | Proverbs 1:7

Where does true knowledge and truth come from? In a world saturated by the philosophy of individual autonomy and consumerism, we often fall into the trap of taking the fruit from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, and we have become the arbiters of what we think is right.

True wisdom does not begin with human introspection or personal autonomy—it begins with God.

What is the Fear of the Lord?

1. To Submit to His Rule: True fear goes beyond casual respect or polite reverence. When we look at the raw, staggering power of God, it should conjure an authentic, holy trembling. But unlike the wicked who tremble and run away, this kind of fear brings us to our knees in absolute submission, ready to bow rather than flee.

2. To Covenant with Him Personally: True knowledge isn't about studying an abstract deity; it’s about being personally bound to the Lord in love. When you are in a covenant relationship with Him, obedience stops looking like a rigid checklist and starts flowing naturally out of an all-encompassing, deeply personal relationship.

3. To Treasure Him Above All Else: A fool "despises" wisdom, treating God's guidance like a cheap commodity to be traded away—just like Esau carelessly selling his birthright for a single meal. In stark contrast, fearing the Lord means placing Him on a pedestal, recognizing that there is absolutely nothing in this life more valuable than Christ.

3. Do we treasure God through Jesus?

Submit to Him. Be true to the covenant with Him. And treasure Him above all things. This is the foundation of true knowledge and life.
