What is our greatest problem… and what does Jesus actually have authority to fix?
In this message from Matthew 9:1-8, we see the climax of a series showing the authority of Christ. Jesus has already shown authority over nature and over demons, but in this passage He makes an even greater claim. He declares that He has authority to forgive sins.
When a paralytic is brought to Him, Jesus does something unexpected. Instead of healing the man first, He says, “Take heart, my son, your sins are forgiven.” This moment reveals the deepest truth of the gospel: our greatest need is not physical healing, changed circumstances, or relief from problems. Our greatest need is forgiveness and a heart restored to God.
This sermon explores what true authority is, why forgiveness is the greatest miracle, and why the gospel demands a response from every person. It also reminds us that those who receive forgiveness from Christ must become people who freely forgive others.
