Fundamentally, love is a choice. And when we love, we devote ourselves to someone to something. As followers of Christ must be discriminating in what we love. To love as a Christian, we must be devoted to loving both God and our neighbor. We also must be careful not to love the "world" -- that is, we must not devote ourselves to that which ignores, opposes and resists God and His purposes. The rich, young ruler learned he couldn't have it both ways (Lk. 18:18-30), neither can we. Moreover, this world is "passing away," and only a fool would tether his life to a sinking ship.
