In this weeks episode the Building Hotrodders discuss emerging technology in the commercial/industrial HVAC industry. We cover different applications of VFD's, discuss magnetic bearing chillers, ground source heat pumps, and new networking technology to allow for easier communication and programming of equipment. A lot of the technology we discuss in this episode has actually been around for many years, but with advancements in manufacturing, materials, etc, this technology is becoming more and more prevalent due to efficiency and capacity gains. Tune in to hear our thoughts!

What if your Building Management System had feelings, could rationalize thoughts, and learn from mistakes...... you would probably think we were talking about the person behind the computer. Well in this weeks episode the Building Hotrodders take a look at Artificial Intelligence (AI) and how this technology may be applied into todays Building Management Systems giving the computer (BMS) human like characteristics described above. Join us for an in depth discussion about the theory of AI, what we think AI is, and how it may be applied in modern facilities to act as an enhancement to todays high tech Building Management Systems.

In this weeks episode the Building Hotrodders discuss the importance of attention to detail. This discussion is applicable in every aspect of our industry. For this episode we brought on a special guest to discuss the importance of attention to detail in the first stages of any building, the sitework. We discuss how attention to detail can make a good project great, and why the lack of attention to detail in one stage of work can cause a ripple effect through an entire project if not caught. Fortunately, attention to detail is a team effort and to be detail oriented does not always mean many extra hours of effort. Tune in to hear our thoughts on attention to detail, and why it is so important in every aspect of construction.

In this episode the Building Hotrodders discuss a critical part of a building management system.......the graphics. When the BMS graphics accurately represent the facility/system the BMS can be a very valuable tool for all types of personnel. Sadly, this is not always the case and in some instances the graphics can seem like an afterthought. This can cause some real troubles for the operations/engineering team. Tune in to hear our thoughts on what quality graphics are and why they are so critical for todays state of the art facilities!

In this episode the Building Hotrodders shift gears a bit and take a dive into discussion about self improvement. To start off the episode, we travel back in time to outline the medieval guild and the role apprentices, journeymen, and masters played. Although dated, this reference fits the discussion very well regarding the roles an individual may play during their career and the importance of mentoring when you are a master of your trade. We also cover some simple steps that an induvial can take to help them succeed in our industry (and others) as well as covering some of our own personal strategies on continuous improvement. Overall, this was a very eye opening discussion for the Building Hotrodders and we hope it is for you as well!

In this weeks episode the Building Hotrodders discuss what we feel is the heart of many facility operations......centrifugal pumps. Pumps play a critical role in processes and HVAC and we discuss the applications and importance for each. We cover pumping basics, pumping principles such as the affinity laws and the Bernoulli equation, and much much more. There are many factors to consider when selecting a pump for an application, and our experts discuss all of the critical elements in the process. If you are a pump novice or expert, we can assure you that you will leave the podcast with some great information on pumps!

A Building Management System (BMS) can sometimes be like a box of chocolates, you never know what your going to get. That is, unless you know what you want and make it a requirement. The problem is, with so much to choose from its hard to keep track of what is a "must have" in a BMS, what is not enough, and what is a waste of money. In todays episode the Building Hotrodders discuss the good......and bad of todays high performance building management systems and outline what we see as the key requirements for a BMS. We cover things like sensing, actuators, security, communications, trending, and much much more. Tune in now to hear our thoughts!
