Course Experience:
When attempting to pick the winner at The Masters, previous experience at Augusta should be the first consideration. In the last 14 years only eight players have managed to place (Top 5) on their Augusta debut, with none of these ending up as the winner.
Driving, Iron Play & Putting:
Generous fairways but ever increasing yardage at Augusta means length takes preference over accuracy from the tee. The last seven winners here, and 10 of the last 11, were all averaging 300yd plus from the tee at the time of winning.
The benefit of long drives means shorter irons into the greens, which are under average size at Augusta. The need to leave uphill putts, on the severely undulating surfaces, makes the ideal target smaller still and increases the need for pinpoint approach play. In the weeks leading up to the Masters the sharpest iron players are usually exposed near the top of the leaderboards at Torrey Pines (Farmers Insurance Open 05/02/15), and Pebble Beach (AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro Am 12/02/15) both venues with very small greens.
A strong capability to control pace and line whilst putting on a fast, heavily undulating surface is another essential for competing at Augusta. Player’s who showed form at Waialae (Sony Open 15/01/15) and carry that through Torrey Pines and Pebble Beach (again), as well as Copperhead at Innisbrook (Valspar Championship 12/03/15) all severely undulating greens, will prove to have built the demon touch required for winning The Masters.
Two tips:
From the above information, the two names that keep cropping up are Jimmy Walker and Jason Day. Both are long enough from the tee averaging over 300yds each. Both have previous Augusta experience, Day with a 2nd and 3rd under his belt and Walker finishing 8th here last year on his debut. Significantly the pair also have wins this year from our key courses, Day at Torrey Pines, as well as a 4th at Pebble Beach and 17th at Waialae. Whilst Walker was triumphant at Waialae, as well as finishing 7th at Torrey Pines.
