Between Lewis & Lovecraft

Frank Herbert part two!

Tyler has an existential crisis, Hannah can’t pronounce Arrakeen, and both of them weigh in on Herbert’s love life. Honestly, Herbert crammed so much living into his 65 years on this planet that we could have easily talked about him for even longer, but hopefully we did him justice between the two episodes.

Also, I (Hannah) swear this author was requested by a listener, but I can’t find their original message. If that was you, reach out and let us know how we did :)

Hannah read: “Dreamer of Dune: The Biography of Frank Herbert” by Brian Herbert (spoiler alert, that’s his son!)

“The mystery of life isn't a problem to solve, but a reality to experience.”

― Frank Herbert, Dune

And boy did Frank Herbert experience life. In the first installment of our two-part episode, Hannah dives into Frank Herbert’s early life and Tyler interrupts to talk about Herbert being a scary tough child with an eye scar, how you shouldn’t marry someone after only knowing them a couple months, and more. We cover Herbert’s early life and the experiences that shaped the sci-fi masterpiece “Dune.”

This week, Hannah sits down with Dave Moore and Christian Sager, co-managers of the forthcoming horror magazine Corridor. The magazine will incorporate short fiction, comics, essays and fine art into one anthology (so, basically like our Halloween special, but in a print form). The stories will blend horror with science fiction and fantasy, focusing on everything weird and wondrous. Hannah got a sneak peek at what readers can expect from the magazine, slated for release in Spring 2021.

Sager and Moore have promised to pay their contributors (an unfortunately unique pledge in the publishing world these days), so they’re crowdfunding to cover that expense as well as printing costs. The Kickstarter campaign closes Nov. 19.

A long message from Tyler.

Reader Info -

Britt Winchester: Host of Contrivance podcast. She’s a personal friend, and friend of the show, and probably our number one fan. She is one of the funniest people I know, along with Drew her co-host. We tried to do something a while back, where I got to hear her do some reading, and I knew she would be perfect for this. Check out her show Contrivance podcast, anywhere you listen to podcasts. Or go to contrivancepod.com

Alexa Tibbils: Alexa got the job to read that story, cause she’s well cause she’s my cousin. She is also super fun to play Dungeons and Dragons with. She’s actually a 911 dispatcher, and she has been working crazy hours this year. So I really wanted to give her a quick shout out for all the hard and crazy work she has been doing to help so many people in these uncertain times. Seriously, thank you to all of our emergency responders, and the dispatchers that work with the public right now.

Dalena Garcia is my mom. She's been actively working on writing sort stories for some time now, and has been looking at becoming a voice actor. Specifically for reading books. So make sure you keep an ear out for her in the future.

And of course James Waldon. Who I got to read a story, because I slipped it into the scripts for my other show, Now Hear This Canby. And James has the greatest voice in the entire world. Thank you James.

The rest of our readers come from the Cast of Fables of Refuge, Fables on YouTube. Carter Michael, Jess Ayers, Lora Dailey, and the Dapper DM himself Jarrett Sullivan all came to play with us this Halloween. And of course the return of friend of the show Aly Fitzgerald. Aly really took the challenge and ran with it. She wrote a story, then did my job of producing a great piece for us. She really did a MUCH better job than I did, in my humble opinion. The whole cast of the show, Fables, did an outstanding job. From Lora Dailey going out of her way to perfect a French accent for a story, to Jess Ayers reading so well, I got literal goosebumps while listening. From Jarret hitting the tone of his story perfectly to Carter Michael making me feel bad for a freaking zombie. Hats off to this amazing cast of actors.

Up next this story was written by Alissa Smith, who has been a listener almost since we first started. And she’s our New Zealand Prophet, speaking to the masses down there of our great gospel. She is also a writer, yoga instructor and book reviewer. Check out her Instagram @ravenbooksnz

Hannah geeks out over the Lord of the Rings trilogy with Crystal and Aly from Best Friends’ Playbook. They talk about some of the iconic friendships (like Legolas and Gimli) and what makes the bonds so special. Aly and Crystal both offer deeper insight into the movie-making process and how Eowyn and Arwyn went from being afterthoughts in the books to kickass heroes in the film version.

Today our devious duo dive deep into Middle Grade Books that they couldn't read when they were in Middle School. With school starting up, and kids needing more and more thinks to read while their are stuck at home, we're doing our part to help easy the boredom, if only a little.

Tyler read Redwall by Brian Jacque. Then reads his wikipedia page for more info.

Hannd Read Song for a Whale by Lynne Kelly.

Also, we are accepting flash fiction for our Halloween episode. 500 -700 words for a spooky, creepy, silly, fun Halloween story submitted to [email protected]

Hannah and Tyler sit down with the Dapper DM himself, Jarrett Sullivan of Fables of Refuge! In this episode, we talk about our favorite fantasy books, and what it was like to get into Dungeons and Dragons for the first time. If you've been following our Gary Gygax coverage, then this is a great way to hear from another person who has been impacted by this game.

Going up on our Youtube page will be the second part of this discussion where Jarret, Tyler and Hannah go through the process of making characters. If you wanna see a brand new player learn how to make characters. Then this is the place to go!  https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCzIxPgrDeBzMXAqOn0G0DfA
