  • Ep. 20 Right to Repair & Section 230

If you believe there should be some level of restriction on conglomerates like Apple, Facebook, and Twitter that protects the rights of consumers, you're going to want to check out this discussion!

Companies like John Deere, Apple, and Tesla don't like third parties repairing their products. In fact, they make it nearly impossible for third parties to be able to repair their products. "Right to repair" laws propose that companies should not be able to prevent owners from repairing their property by making it difficult to do so.

Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act is a clause that prevents the social media oligarchs like Twitter, Facebook, Google, and YouTube from being held liable for curating the content on their platforms and preventing certain information from seeing the light of day. Its general design protects all those who post on the internet from being held liable for the comments others might leave on their content, but it has not been revised in 20+ years.

  • Ep. 16 Eviction Moratorium

The Supreme Court strikes down President Biden's attempt to use the CDC to extend the moratorium on evictions which prevented landlords from removing tenants who are behind on their rent. While he openly acknowledged that this was very likely unconstitutional and would be struck down by the Supreme Court, his justification was that it would "buy these people the time they need while it's being litigated". Join us as we unpack the constitutionality of this unilateral decision and whether or not it was necessary given the current COVID data.

  • Ep. 14 Vaccine Passports

A number of New York facilities will require patrons to show proof of vaccination to enter--no exceptions--including indoor dining, gyms, nightclubs, concert halls, and movie theaters. This legislation is designed to boost the number of vaccinated citizens but is in dangerous territory of being discriminatory since there are no alternative options (such as providing a negative COVID test or masking) to account for those who are disqualified from vaccination due to health or religious circumstances. Join us as we discuss the ethical and practical feasibility of implementing mandatory vaccines at the national, state, and private level.

*Announcement*: Ryan will join Ken Drew, host of Taboo Topic--another political talk show, on Friday. Check them out on Spotify this weekend!
