Writer, father and long-time friend of RTRFM Laurie Steed is no stranger to vulnerability and his latest collection of short stories published with UWA Publishing is no different.

Greater City Shadows is a culmination of everything Laurie does best; a love letter to connection, relationships and Boorloo/Perth, spanning the people, places and moments that define the city.

Though based in the most isolated city in the world his work has been broadcast on BBC Radio 4 and published in Best Australian Stories, The Age and Meanjin…just to name a few.

He has a PhD in creative writing from The University of Western Australia and currently works for Writing WA as an editor, writer and workshop facilitator.

In this episode Laurie chats about creating during the pandemic, being the father of two young boys and how he has made friends with risk.

Kristy Nita Brown is an emerging WA children’s book author whose debut book Looking for Lilly was shortlisted for the West Australian Young Readers Book Award and won second place at the 2022 aspiring authors comp in the chapter book category.

She has successfully published locally and nationally and is completely independant.

Produced in collaboration with Noel Nannup, Alice Ford, Nasen Robb, Clancy Martin and Mariela Espino Zuppa, Forests Atlas blends maps with artworks, photography and story in celebration of the life and colour of this unique biodiversity hotspot.

The two discuss the origin story of this special collaboration and the cultural and political impact the project has had on the south west.

Carrie Cox is a journo, author, tutor, mother and timid surfer, never all at once and not in that order.

She’s lived in Perth since 2010 where she has penned a weekly satirical column Carrie On which ran for more than ten years. She has authored two non-fiction books and several novels, her latest of which, Storylines, is a tender, humorous and earnest exploration of beauty, family and ageing.

Brendan Ritchie is a writer and acedemic from the south coast of WA. He is the winner of the 2022 Dorothy Hewett Award for an unpublished manuscript and author of novels including Carousel (2015) and Beyond Carousel (2016).

Brendan has a PhD in Creative Writing and has also published poetry and non-fiction in several notable journals and collections. He lives on Wadandi land with his wife and two young daughters.

Madison Godfrey is a writer, editor and educator who lives on Whadjuk Noongar land, with a rescue cat named Sylvia.

They have performed poetry at the Sydney Opera House, the Royal Albert Hall, TEDx, Glastonbury Festival and have recently released their second poetry collection Dress Rehearsals – a memoir made of poetry documenting a decade of performing womanhood in a non-binary body.

In Chapter Five of Between the Lines we learn about Madison’s playful experiment in creating fun, frivolous yet deeply personal poetry; learning and unlearning femininity and getting back in touch with their desire.

In chapter four of our series Danielle Raffaele sits down with local writer Katherine Allum, self professed ‘writer geek’ and winner of the 2023 Fogarty Literary Award.

American-born, Katherine developed her forthcoming debut novel novel The Skeleton House as part of an MA at City, University of London and dived deep into writing during COVID from a tiny one-bedroom flat.

The book is work of literary fiction set in a small town in the Nevada desert and follows Meg; mother of two and married to Kyle. He is the husband everyone thinks is perfect but tension rises as Kyle builds his dream home and Meg’s desire for autonomy and freedom resurfaces as does a secret from the past.

Craig Silvey is one of WA’s most beloved authors and a hit both nationally and globally for his works including Rhubarb, Jasper Jones and Honeybee.

He returns with Runt, a whimsical yet didactic story about a young girl and her best friend – a dog of indeterminate pedigree. It’s a story about resilience, county town life, the impacts of climate change and the importance of joy and community.

We turn the page to Chapter Two with emerging local writer Molly Schmidt.

Molly is a journalist and novelist who won the 2022 Fremantle TAG Hungerford Award for the unpublished manuscript Salt River Road set to be out via Fremantle Press in November 2023.

Schmidt’s coming-of-age story is set in 1970s regional Western Australia and follows teenage siblings, Rose and Frank Tetley, who are grappling with the death of her mother. Though fictional the story draws on her own experience of losing her father to cancer and champions the wisdom and knowledge of Traditional Custodians across the South West with Molly embarking on an extensive research and collaboration period to make sure all local voices are included in the story.
