And now, coming this spring: Athens Main Street Merchants Alley Happy Hour Music Series. Taking place every Friday night, April 1 to July 29, 2022, in the newly renovated alleyway on Jefferson Street from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. There will be a new performer every week allowing for a variety of musical acts!

Library Director Jennifer Baxter talks with historian, Dr. Shari L. Williams. Dr. Williams discusses her research on the role 4-H and Home Demonstration Clubs played in the lives of rural African-American women from the 1920's to the 1960's. Introduced to teach farm women domestic skills and food preservation, these clubs also served as social gathering places where leadership and organizational skills were developed. Spanning several generations up to the turbulent 60's, these clubs fostered community, kinship, and empowered African-American women to seek a larger role in in the pursuit of voting and civil rights.

Spanning 1938-2000, the book chronicles the history of the award winning Athens High School Golden Eagle Band. They are joined by former Golden Eagle Band Director, Dan Havely, who led the band for 34 years. This small town band represented, not only the high school, but it also became the pride of the entire Athens, Alabama community.
