Deep Thinker, Illustrator-Sculptor, and Scott’s brother, Casey Trout, talks about the three pillars that hold up his Christian faith. 

Pillar One: the transformation Casey has experienced as a result of his faith. 

Pillar Two: the transformation he has witnessed in others lives as a result of following the teachings of Jesus. 

And Pillar Three: the fact that western civilization values, such as a bill of rights and the concept of equality only come from a Christian worldview. 

Which is where Casey concludes that equality under the law is a Christian miracle.

Behind the Scenes:

What is Between Two Worlds all about? Obviously its a podcast about belief, un-belief, and everything in between. But what exactly does that mean.

Host Scott Trout takes us into behind the scenes of where the name Between Two Worlds came from and what the podcast is all about.

Our Story: 

It all got started back in the beginning of the Corona lockdown when Scott was feeling "quarantine crazy" and decided to make a podcast with that old microphone his wife had bought him two years earlier, but first he needed a partner in crime. That's where Joey, an agnostic who is down to talk about anything, came onto the scene. Scott and Joey had just finished an improv class together from EasyLaughs in Amsterdam. After each class they and their improv buddies would go out for beers and talk about literally everything. Scott, a Christian who works with international students in Amsterdam, started to feel this tension that in a world of so much polarization, these kind of conversations only happen with people who think like you. Christians only talk with Christians. Atheists only talk with atheists. and so on. There is very little respectful yet challenging dialogue. Might be oversimplified, but feels overwhelmingly true. So they came up with the idea of interviewing people's stories of faith on the podcast and then debating the topics that come up from their story.

Critical thinker Sterre Mense is back with Scott and Joey to discuss the way he seeks to live his life in the absence of some overriding religious ideology. What he is currently working with is the practice of Radical Honesty. Radical Honesty is a way of life that requires its practitioners to move beyond the daily self-censorship we humans partake in to stay "nice." Instead, it asks you to take full responsibility of your emotions and the story you are creating in your head about the circumstances around you, as opposed to making other people the cause of your pain. From there it teaches you how to live fully honest with yourself and with others. Sterre and former guest Kristina are both practitioners and have found the practice extremely helpful in their day to day lives.

Critical Thinker and Atheist, Sterre Mense, is back with his last installment of his interview with Scott and Joey. In this one, he turns the focus onto Scott and the biases that can exist in conversations about religion. Specifically he confronts Scott with the idea of "proportionality bias," which is the process by which someone experiences and extraordinary circumstances and thus concludes there must be an extraordinary explanation. Put another way, people often believe in God after some sort of "supernatural" experience. For Sterre, this is a bias that points to humans desire to have an explanation for everything that happens. Even the unexplainable.
