Janis Lane-Ewart has dedicated her life to cultural activism and community service. Late last year Janis was honored with a prestigious Sally Award. The Sallys are named for Sally Ordway Irvine, and they celebrate individuals and institutions that strengthen and enrich Minnesota with their commitment to the arts and arts education. Janis received the award for Commitment. Janis was born and raised in Chicago. She moved to Minneapolis in the late 1980s. She was executive director of KFAI – Fresh

Once a month for On the House we talk about issues related to home ownership. Local real estate agent Jesse Davis joins Heidi and John on the Friday Morning Show. Jesse talks about changes in the housing market compared to this time last year. He tells us that houses are moving more quickly, the cost of houses have risen significantly, interest rates are much lower and he talks about the unpredictability of the future in the housing market.

On the Friday Morning Show, Heidi talks with Marshall Helmberger the editor of the Timberjay Newspaper . This week they talk about mining politics, as the Iron Range Resources and Rehabilitation Board refused to fund a water project on the Fond du Lac reservation because of the tribal government’s opposition to mining pollution. Marshall also tells us about the protest in Ely, the moderate drought conditions in NE Minnesota and the opening of the Vince Shute bear sanctuary near Orr.

When schools closed in MN due to the COVID-19 pandemic and distance learning began, John Latimer and I weren't sure we'd be getting student phenology reports anymore. We did. Rob Marohn teaches in the "outer reaches" of the Proctor School District at Pike Lake Elementary. A group of his class thrived and dug in deeper on Phenology during home learning. We talked with him this week to thank him for his contributions and on making it through a complicated school year.

A special session of the 2020 MN Legislature is not a surprise – due in large part to a bonding bill that did not get passed and also the unusual circumstances of COVID-19.
