There's a woman in Luke 10 who does everything a good host, a good servant, a good woman "should" do — and Jesus tells her the very thing she's avoiding is the one thing that would actually heal her.

In this episode, I take you into a house of my own — one without a single bed set up in it yet — and into a kitchen in Bethany, where a woman named Martha heard something she wasn't expecting either. We look at both scenes of Mary's story (Luke 10:38–42 and John 12:1–8), what it means that Christ commended the unconventional choice and corrected the conventional one, and what the Hebrew words behind "wait on the Lord" actually mean — not passivity, but the refusal to seize control.

That wound is real, and it is ancient. In Genesis 38, a widow named Tamar lived that exact abandonment, denied a husband, an heir, a future, and covering by the one man responsible for her. Judah assumed the worst about her. God did not.

A few days ago I was on a walk, listening to Judges 16, and I couldn't believe how obviously foolish Samson was being — three times warned, three times he handed Delilah more of himself anyway. Then a second thought stopped me cold: how obvious is it to the people who love me, when I'm doing the exact same thing?

This episode is the answer to that question. It's the story of a walk that turned into a confession, a chapter in Judges I'd read past a hundred times, and a framework tucked inside Psalm 37 that I'd never actually followed all the way through — trust, delight, commit, be still, wait patiently, surrender the anxiety, and only then, abundant peace.

Samson skipped straight to the desire of his heart and left out everything that was supposed to come first. I did the same thing for seventeen years of marriage, dressed up in wisdom that looked biblical and wasn't.

I had the intact home. The husband. Five kids. On paper, nothing was wrong. Everyone on the outside thought we had the ideal home. This week, I'm telling you what was actually happening underneath it — and about a woman in Scripture whose story I read years before my own marriage and never understood until it was already too late to have it going in.
