Beyond Canon Podcast

Stephen Shoemaker was a Fellow at our Centre for Advances Studies "Beyond Canon_" for a year. As a crown of his research in our Centre he published the book "Creating the Qur’an: A Historical-Critical Study." In this podcast episode we talked with him about the book, but also about the different academic contexts in which he had worked, about the perspectives for young scholars and many other topics. Dear listeners of our podcast, in this new episode we interviewed Garrick Allen, who is a dear friend and fellow of our Centre. In this episode of our podcast, the academic coordinator of our Beyond Canon project, Dr. Stefanie Hallinger, spoke with Dr. Mari Mamyan. Mari - who is one of our first fellows - works very persistently and diligently on the new critical edition of the Armenian Infancy Gospel and shared with us her long-acquired knowledge gained from associating with this text, but also the difficulties we faced at our Centre at the very beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic. In our new podcast episode, we spoke with Daniel Galadza, who was our fellow for several months in Regensburg, but our cooperation will continue in the future. Of course we asked him, when and how he became interested in liturgy as a science. And Daniel gave us some very interesting answers on this as well as on our questions about the dating of written liturgical texts and books, the reliance of liturgical texts upon the extra-canonical or apocryphal writings, and about the influence of the mentioned scriptures on certain Christian liturgical practices. We also wanted to learn more about the attitude towards canonical and non-canonical writings in the past and in nowaday's liturgical practice as well as how interests do change, at least in science.

Gurtner, external affiliate at the Centre for Social Scientific Study of the Bible at St Mary's University in Twickenham, London. In this episode, we spoke to Janet Spittler, Associate Professor at the Department of Religious Studies at the University of Virginia, USA. We talked about the Apocryphal Acts of the Apostles, but Janet also gave us her thoughts on what is most important to do good research on the apocryphal writings and what the long-term goals should be for those who engage in this enigmatic world.
