🗣️ BILINGUAL SCRIPT (中英对照 · 辅助理解)
Mandy: [Sighs] Patrick, I am so frustrated with myself. I had a meeting with my manager today, and I chickened out again.
Patrick: Oh no. What happened? Hello everyone, by the way. Welcome to Beyond English. I'm Patrick.
Mandy: Hi everyone. I'm Mandy. well, Patrick, I have been wanting to ask for a raise for months. I practiced what to say. But when the meeting started, I just... froze. I couldn't start the conversation.
Patrick: I understand. Starting a difficult conversation is the hardest part. You needed to find a way to: Bring it up.
Mandy: Bring it up. Does that mean I have to carry something?
Mandy: Bring it up。
Patrick: Think of it metaphorically. Imagine the topic—the salary raise—is a box sitting on the floor. It is hidden. Nobody is looking at it.
Patrick: To discuss it, you have to physically "bring it up" from the floor and put it on the table. You are making it visible.
Mandy: That is a great visual. I left the box on the floor today. So, are there other ways to say this? Maybe something less... heavy?
Patrick: Sure. If you just want to touch on a topic lightly, you can use: Mention. "I mentioned the budget."
Mandy: And if it is a serious problem? Like a safety issue?
Mandy:
Patrick: Then you might use: Raise. "I need to raise a concern." It sounds more formal and urgent.
Mandy: Okay, back to "Bring up." Can I use this for personal things? Like if my friend owes me money?
Mandy: 好的,回到 "Bring up"。
Patrick: Absolutely. Money is awkward. You can say: "I hate to bring this up, but you still owe me for lunch."
Mandy: "I hate to bring this up." That is a good phrase. It softens the blow. What about at work? How do I bring up the salary topic next time?
Patrick: Wait for a good moment, maybe after you discuss a success. Then say: "While we are talking about my performance, I would like to bring up the topic of my salary."
Mandy: That sounds smooth. Is there any time I should definitely NOT bring something up?
Patrick: Yes. Avoid bringing up past mistakes in an argument.
Patrick:
Mandy: Oh, like "You always forget to take out the trash"?
Mandy:
Patrick: Exactly. Don't bring up old history just to hurt someone. It is not productive.
Mandy: Good advice. Now, Patrick, how is "Bring up" different from "Speak up"?
Mandy: 好建议。现在,Patrick,"Bring up" 和 "Speak up"(大声说/大胆表达)有什么区别?
Patrick: "Speak up" is about volume or confidence—finding your voice. "Bring up" is about introducing a specific topic.
Mandy: So I need to speak up to bring up the salary issue.
Patrick: Perfect. Listeners, is there a topic you have been afraid to bring up?
Mandy: We hope you find the courage this week.
Mandy:
Patrick: Have a great day, everyone. Go beyond words.
Patrick:
