  • 359: Exploring: Beware the Cat by William Baldwin - Part 1 (Archive LIVE Stream)
Welcome to archived live stream exploring session for Beware the Cat by William Baldwin. It was live streamed on Robert Crighton's private YouTube channel, but not officially added to the podcast, during the opening of the 2020 plague and, beyond a few minor tweaks, remains as streamed. It's a First Look, so it's rough as such things are, and obviously we've come a long way since then.
This first exploring session covers the opening of the book...
Following our live reading in 2023, an adaptation of the book is rehearsing now, planning to tour later this year. If you'd like to be kept up to speed with developments, join the Beware the Cat mailing list.
If you're interested in the show coming to your area, get in touch here.

The audio recording of our live adaptation from the Revels season is available now - but it isn't on the pod for the moment. It can be listened to by signing up for free to our Patreon - it won't be released on the podcast as per usual so as not to give away too easily a future production.
Part One can be heard here! Just sign up and listen!
Part Two can be heard here! Just sign up and listen!

  • 352: Hymen’s Triumph by Samuel Daniel (And Scene!)
Welcome to this new strand, a return to a promised thing for our patrons - occasional scenes and speeches from plays, voted for by those you support our work. This is a scene from Hymen’s Triumph by Samuel Daniel, recorded live at our Revels season on Wednesday 13th December 2023. It’s a two hander of love – with the love lorn Thirsis, prompted by Palaemon to speak of his troubles. With Keith Hill as Thirsis, and Valentina Vinci as Palaemon.
NB: We are aware that there are two different pronunciations of Palaemon in this recording. One of us wasn't paying attention.

First Look Exploring Sessions for the play are here.
A playlist for explorations of all Samuel Daniel's work is here.

  • 301: The Lincoln Crying Christmas Ceremony (Fragment)
It's very merry episode of Fragments - The Lincoln Crying Christmas Ceremony 1564
It’s December 1564, the place Lincoln – and as today where there’s a little ceremony to switch on the Christmas lights, or open a Christmas Fair, lo the Common Council of Lincoln had a similar event to mark the beginning of Christmas
The Crying Christmas text is mostly extant, with just a few edges lost in places - we’ve left the gaps in place, reimagining the event in the present day with a knackered PA that cuts the speakers off.
So, sit back and enjoy the speeches of the three senators performed by Alex Scott Fairley, Emma Kemp, and Liza Graham.

About Beyond Shakespeare

From the publisher's feed

From the earliest drama in English, to the closing of the theatres in 1642, there was a hell of a lot of drama produced - and a lot of it wasn't by Shakespeare. Apart from a few noble exceptions…
