  • 293: Part of a Play by the Unknown (Fragment)
It's another fragment, labelled as Part of a Play by someone, but it's not desperately play like... so... here it is. It's... not a particularly easy text to read, so many bonus thanks to Heydn McCabe for giving it a go.
Part of a Play by the Unknown
The part was performed by Heydn McCabe, and the episode hosted and produced by Robert Crighton

Our patrons received this episode in March 2023 - approx. 8 months early.

  • 290: Discussing: Jack Straw with Dr Stephen Longstaffe
This is a VERY belated episode. It was recorded via the telephone back in the before times - in the later end of 2019. The recording is very messy (it's been tidied up, but there are still a lot of pops and bangs and other strange issues) but it is... rather good, we hope.
It's a discussion of The Life and Death of Jack Straw, at the time we were finishing our full cast audio adaptation, and planning a live production (which the plague cancelled). It is released now, as we start to revive our plans to stage it again - and run low on the pre-plague audio. Increasingly, our work is all new.
So, enjoy this chat with Dr Stephen Longstaffe, editor of the only modern critical edition that is (sort of) still available (you might need to sell a kidney) and host Robert Crighton.

More Jack Straw on the podcast - discussions, !Spoilers! & our audio adaptation - https://audioboom.com/playlists/4629941-the-life-and-death-of-jack-straw
And another run on the Tube-of-You - https://youtu.be/yohgz7LhDuM

Our patrons received an unedited version of this episode YEARS AGO! And the uncut 2 hour recording is still on the feed.

  • 291: Live Stream this Sunday! (Occupation and Idleness)
    Live show this Sunday!

A quick reminder that we have a live streamed audio adaptation of Occupation and Idleness on Sunday 22nd October at 2.30pm

We’re recording a bunch of new stuff across the day, and then in the afternoon we’re live streaming a full run of Occupation and Idleness by the Unknown, plus a bonus mini sketch, Preist the Barber. Occupation and Idleness is the first surviving true interlude play – it’s from the middle of the fifteenth century and is mostly forgotten about – but it does everything your average Tudor interlude will do, it just does it in the medieval period. It’s a three hander about education – with a cheeky school boy who just doesn’t want to do any work, being encouraged – shall we say – to study by Occupation, a hard working farmer, and Doctrine, the figure representing religion in the play. It’s a lively, nay, a tad violent a play, with an ending that isn’t surprising as to what happens – but perhaps surprising how it happens. It was, as ever, a different age. Or is it?

I will be joined on the live stream by Liza Graham and Emma Kemp, and will perform the play in full, followed by the short sketch Preist the Barber – which is… well… it’s a thing.

Live streaming as audio on YouTube via the link at 2.30pm on Sunday 22nd October 2023 -

  • 288: Detraction by the Unknown (Fragment)
Welcome to another fragment - known as Detraction, or An Interlude of Detraction, or Light Judgement, Verity and Justice – by the more literal of title givers. We have no idea what the title actually is. It was printed around 1550, and could date between 1533 and the break with Rome and 1553, when Edward VI popped his clogs. So 1550ish.

Detraction was played by Simon Nader, Light Judgement by Rob Myson and Verity by Heydn McCabe
Detraction was hosted and produced by Robert Crighton

  • 286: Discussing: Boys Companies with Dr Harry R. McCarthy
This is a discussion on boys companies, who popped in and out of the public consciousness in the late 16th and early 17th centuries. Dr Harry R. McCarthy has written about boys companies in the period, as well as their recreation today, so was an excellent guest to chat about the trends of the boys company world.
Dr Harry R. McCarthy is Lecturer in Early Modern Literature at Exeter, and has published Boy Actors in Early Modern England and Performing Early Modern Drama Beyond Shakespeare: Edward's Boys with Cambridge University Press.
His research centres on early modern theatre, the body in performance, and premodern childhood. He is particularly interested in boy actors on the early modern stage (the topic of his first two books) and is currently developing a project on the intersecting concepts of whiteness and childhood in the early modern period and its literature.

About Beyond Shakespeare

From the publisher's feed

From the earliest drama in English, to the closing of the theatres in 1642, there was a hell of a lot of drama produced - and a lot of it wasn't by Shakespeare. Apart from a few noble exceptions…
