This week we have three stories, all from the United States, that look at the ways that Christianity in America is interacting with the LGBTQ community. We’ve got a quote from a presidential hopeful, a former president at a football game, and a teacher taking a stand all on this week’s episode of Beyond Sunday.

  • Episode 55 - An Interview with Bishop Mike
This week the Beyond Sunday Team had a chance to sit down with Bishop Mike Rinehart, bishop of the Texas Louisiana Gulf Coast Synod of the ELCA. We joined Bishop Mike at the synod office and put him on the hot seat to answer some of our most pressing questions, What exactly does a bishop do? What are the blessings and challenges of working in a national denomination? What’s it like to only be able to walk diagonally? What does it mean to respond to national issues on behalf of many churches and congregations? Why don’t you get to wear a cool hat?
We had a great time in our conversation and we hope you’ll enjoy it too!

  • Episode 54 - This Podcast is Better than Yours
We’re exploring to benefits and challenges of living in a world where just about everything can be turned into a competition. The Beyond Sunday Team is no stranger to competition. Who doesn’t want to be seen as successful and victorious? Why wouldn’t we want to be the last one standing?
But do we ever take it too far? What happens when our desire for victory leads us to do so at the expense of others? What happens if our children are taught that the goal is always to be the best and nothing else will do?
On the other hand, many of us grew up in a world in which there were no “winners” and participation was considered victory enough. Is there a detriment to raising children in a world in which there is not push to be the “best” or to constantly be improving?
We’ll tackle all these questions and more this week on Beyond Sunday!
