  • Episode 53 - ELCA Social Statements
The Beyond Sunday Team works at Lord of Life Lutheran Church which is a part of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA). In August the ELCA had their triennial Church Wide Assembly which brings together delegates from across the country to discuss and make decisions about a range of issues facing the church today. This year the delegates approved three particularly unique and potentially controversial statements around immigration, sexism, and slavery.
This week on the Podcast we’re breaking down these statements to try and gain a little more perspective than what we hear in the 1 minute soundbites. How do these statements direct our local congregations and personal faith? What does it mean to be a “sanctuary” denomination? What exactly do we mean when we say things like “patriarchy” and “sexism”? We hope you’ll join this conversation with us and let us know what you think by sending us an e-mail or posting on our Facebook page.

  • Episode 52 - The Anniversary Special: Is Nostalgia Dangerous?
Beyond Sunday is turning 1! We’re learning to walk, saying our first few words, eating solid foods, and not quite ready to be potty trained. All of us at Beyond Sunday are so grateful for you, our loyal listeners, and all the ways that you have continued to support us over the last 52 weeks. We hope you continue to enjoy this podcast for years to come.
This week we’ll look back on some of our favorite stories that we’ve covered in the past year. Then we will take a few minutes to talk about “nostalgia.” We all look back on our past with fondness and often we end of glossing over, or even ignoring, the struggle and challenges that the past brought with it. This means we look back on the “good ol’ days” with the intention of recapturing something that, in reality, never was. How does this affect our ability to live into the future of the world? How does this direct our faith? How can we honor our past and not be hindered from moving forward? We’ll tackle all these questions and more on this week’s episode of Beyond Sunday!

This week on the podcast Patrick is giving us a preview of his upcoming class “Paul Behaving Badly” that he will be teaching at Lord of Life. It turns out there are plenty of things that appear in Paul’s letters that are really challenging for us to understand by our modern standards. Over the next 4 Sundays, Patrick’s class will look at a few of these passages and explore how we might interpret them for our lives now. We’ll skim the surface of this important conversation and encourage you to join this new opportunity on Sunday morning.

  • Episode 51 - Paul Behaving Badly
We all know the routine. We’re reading through the New Testament expecting to find beautiful words like “Love is patient. Love is kind.” Or “Neither height nor depth can separate us from the love of God.'“ But instead we stumble across this: “Slaves obey your earthly masters” (Ephesians 6:5); “It is a disgrace for a women to speak in the church” (1 Corinthians 14:35). Somehow these passages don’t always feel like they fit with our current context and how we see God at work in the world.

  • Episode 50 - Communion: Sacraments Part 2
You know the routine. You’re sitting quietly in the pew as the sermon wraps up and suddenly you feel your stomach start to rumble. “Did I forget to eat breakfast?” you think to yourself, “I could really go for a snack.” Then, as if by divine intervention, the pastor stands up and invites everyone to come forward and join in a feast! But when you get to the front of the line all your given is a bite of bread and a sip of wine. Not exactly the edible satisfaction you were hoping for. And yet, week after week, we come back to this same meal that we have come to call “Communion.”
This week the Beyond Sunday team is taking you through the ins and outs of this strange practice of eating in the middle of worship. Why do we do it? What does it mean for us and people of faith? Pull out a loaf of bread and grab a glass of wine (or grape juice!) as we tackle what may well be the most important thing we do as the Church: Communion.
