McKayla and I discuss how, for years, we believed that we needed to drive our heels down while riding. Recently, we have both began the process of undoing this in our riding. We discuss how, when we drive the heels down, it makes us brace our entire leg, and also takes the "spring" action out of our ankle joints. We also discuss the implications for our upper body position when we drive the heels down so hard.

Today we talk about Camri’s mini-mule Kevin, and how her process with Kevin has shifted from taking it 100% at his pace, to speeding up the training process a little. The perspectives of mules being stubborn, hard to train, and that they never forget made Camri question if she was truly being fair in pushing Kevin out of his comfort zone when being caught, but she came to realize that mules are not much different than horses. We discuss how progress doesn’t happen in our comfort zone, and there are ethical and safe ways to help a horse or mule through discomfort and to show them that they can find comfort, peace, and consistency with a human.

We also dive into how corrections are not a bad thing, and that corrections can - and should - be given in certain situations. Without boundaries with horses, we can get into some pretty dicey situations. Teaching and guidance should always be the first and best way for us to shape a horse’s behavior, but when horses cross boundaries, we need to enforce those to keep us safe, and to stay consistent in what we expect of our horses.

Jade Savage joins McKayla and I today as we discuss a little about Jade's story. She is a mother of two young boys, an occupational therapist, a 4H coach, a doula, and a birth photographer. She is a woman of all trades! Jade share's a bit about her younger years and how she got to where she is now. She now runs her own photography business, Jade Savage Photography where she does birth, wedding, and rodeo photography. Through photographing births, and also through her own birth experiences with her boys, Jade was drawn to become a doula -- a woman who is hired to provide support, guidance, and a voice for a woman during labor and delivery. Jade shares so much about her role as a doula and how she helps women have a positive birth experience, regardless of c-section, epidural, or natural labor. Jade has so much to share, and we plan to bring her on again to discuss more about her role as a photographer!
